Dyspraxia and cerbal pulsey
I am just wondering is there a link between dyspraxia and cerebal pulsey as i walked into to see a doctor who watched me walk in and asked weather i had cerebal pulsey i said no i am dyspraxia the doctor said the way i walk and move makes him think i have cerebal pulsey as well as dyspraxia is there a link i know there is many forms of dyspraxia and cerebal pulsey in terms of how servere they can be is there a link and i am thinking of getting diagnosed properly is there a link?

Hi Alex. It's possible to have both, but having one of them doesn't necessarily mean that someone would have the other. Some symptoms of cerebral palsy can be similar to those of dyspraxia, although cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the part of the brain responsible for controlling movement, whereas no one is really sure what causes dyspraxia. If you had a brain scan it might show whether part of your brain has been damaged, causing cerebral palsy. The vast majority of cases of cerebral palsy are diagnosed very early on in a child's life- however, if the cerebral palsy is mild it might not be noticed in early childhood, with the result that someone might not get diagnosed until much later on.

A friend who was diagnosed with dyspraxia, was assumed by a psychologist to have cerebal palsy because of his walking.

I don’t know if this proof one way or the other but I have both dyplegic spastic cerebral palsy and dyspraxia, the dyspraxia was diagnosed several years later and was picked up by my physiotherapist.
when I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy ~25 + years ago I don’t think dyspraxia really existed as a diagnosis so the two tended to get lumped in together even though they were later found to be different things.
The symptoms of the two can be very similar so its hard to tell them apart this is how I understand it (might be completely wrong though):
* Cerebral palsy (as ally cat pointed out ) is caused by damage or in maturities to the parts of the brain that control movement meaning poor co-ordination and stiff inflexible muscles.
*Dyspraxia can be caused by many things and affects a number of different parts of the brain, although from what I understand it mainly affects the cerebellum .
I think that’s the bit of the brain that "interprets" the higher brains commands and sends the down the spinal cord via the brain stem and is part of the reason dyspraxics have bad co-ordination cos the commands get a bit confused.
Dyspraxics have also been shown to have differences in the limbic system which among other things contains the hypocampus - part of the brains memory processing system (hence the problems we have memory) and the amigdela - the part of the brain involved with emotional response and social interaction (and a part of the brain that shows major structural differences in most autistic, possibly why dyspraxia is part of the autistic spectrum ? )
Dyspraxia seems to have more of an effect on the way the brain processes and perceives information, I think dyspraxics are clumsy more because of there spatial perception where as CP has more of an affect on the actual physical "movement signals" (and I got both
) . This would partly explain why dyspraxics are often hyper-mobile where as people with CP never are (not in the affected limbs at least).

CAUSES
Dyspraxia is not the result of poor physical strength, impaired primary sensation, delayed development, body deformity, or anything that would show up on normal neurological examination. It can be acquired through damage to the brain from a stroke, an accident, or medical disaster to the brain. These people are often older, and have a neurological memory of praxis to work towards. However, damage acquired at an early age may also impair the normal course of development, and thus be developmental. Developmental Dyspraxia occurs from birth or an early age, thus affecting the normal development of the child, and its causes are not obvious. There may be an inherited tendency towards similar neurological disorders.
There may have been a glitch of some kind (illness, slight trauma, momentary lack of oxygen, etc.) at the crucial developmental time or at birth which caused damage to some cells. It may be that the growth of the dendrites or the connections - synapses and neurotransmitters - which connect the cells is at fault. It may be a matter of which cells, and how many, failed to grow and develop enough to reach their destination at the right time before birth. It often co-exists with other disorders (e.g. mild Cerebral Palsy, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder, etc.) This fact also makes diagnosis difficult, as symptoms intermingle or are shared by more than one disorder. The gathering, sorting, and storing of sensory information may be faulty. Or the cause may remain completely unknown. In other words, very little is known of the causes, despite considerable research over the years.
