QUIRK-ISMS
Anybody have any Quirk-isms with their Dyspraxia
I dont have any myself but my son tends to flap his hands when he gets excited ,and makes a humming noise when he is concentrating,which he does without realising.He used to get told off in school ,he calls it his concentrating noise , al through he has left school and if he playing games on the computer he still makes that sound without even realising.Anyone else have any little quirk-isms ,rituals or anything else.

Re: QUIRK-ISMS
I purr when I'm content, and I bounce like a puppy when I get excited, I also have to prepare food in a certain way or else I cant eat it, some foods cant touch, others can...

Re: QUIRK-ISMS
I don't know about querks exactly - i guess a lot of the commen dyspraxic things such as figgeting, not knowing when to shut up, getting distracted etc.
I have found a way to shut up - i have a T'shirt i can grab and put in my mouth if needed - it looks wierd but who cares - I know I am anyway

Re: QUIRK-ISMS
When I get really excited about something, I tend to clap or rub my hands, or bounce them onto the wall. I try to make sure that I only do it when I'm at home and no one's around because in the past my brother made fun of me because of it. I know that it''s really weird and I'm a bit ashamed of it
Re: QUIRK-ISMS
I suppose I may have some odd behaviours, but I wouldn't nessacarily associate them with my dyspraxia.

Re: QUIRK-ISMS
1. When unwinding or falling asleep in generally i rotate one of my feet round & round.
2. When eating something that contains different ingredients like a chunky vegetable soup or mixed bean salad i tend to eat the ingredients in a particular order.
3. I take a very long time to get comfortable in bed when going to sleep (and this tends to involve a lot of fidgeting).
4. I can be prone to random long periods of grooming myself at night in my spare time when i'm by myself- i find doing something like meticulously plucking my eyebrows or washing my face etc helps me unwind.
5. I have a very random appetite & diet and enjoy diverse array of food. Its not uncommon for me to have something random like curry or hotpot for breakfast.
I don't know how many (if any) of these are related to Dysphraxia though.

Oooooooooooooh. An interesting one!
)
Food - yep, quirky...somethings MUSTNT go together....pie with any sort of custard/cream/ice cream is just wrong! I hate bits to get into my cream or ice cream! Also hate any 'bits' in cakes, yoghurt etc I tend to obsess over one kind of food for a while/one type of chocolate (currently I'm on twirls!)/one drink etc this is not because I like it more than others, it's kind of making sure that I get the same enjoyable experience again and again and again. I know I loved it yesterday, so if I eat it again today, it will make me happy! These fads can last from one week to a couple of years!!! Then one day I will just try it and not get the same high from it and I know I need to move on!!!
Can't stand soggy bread. Certain things mustnt ever touch if they are on a plate together. Certain things have optimum temperatures for consumption....oh the list is endless!!!!!
))
I tend to wiggle my feed about or say 'mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm' if I'm eating something that is delicious....I try to only do this at home...
If I feel sick I wiggle one foot about endlessly as somehow it comforts me and makes me feel better.
I stick my tongue out when I am concentrating (this one I try really hard to do only at home, but sometimes I find myself doing it in public!)
there are many others...but really don't want to bore you

^ Oh i do the whole food fad/obsession thing too! It applies to pretty much every drink/food (particularly alcohol).
When it comes to alcohol, when i first started going to the pub my first drink was Cider and from then afterwards i always drank Cider. Then a friend introduced me to WKD Blue and i loved that so i drank that instead of Cider. I then went through a phase of Baileys & Vodka (sounds disgusting i know but it was the "in thing" back at college then)- this stopped when i got so drunk on the stuff i threw up on it that it put me off it for life (in fact any time i have a bad drinking experience with alcohol it tends to put me off the drink in question for life).
So i went back to WKD blue and i drank that for a few years (literally almost nothing else) until i started getting bored of it and moved onto Smirnoff Ice (again another friend introduced drink). Tasted much better than WKD Blue (for some reason i don't even like the taste of that WKD stuff now- so mega sweet bubble gummy in flavor, yuck) and Smirnoff Ice has been my main drink for about 6 years now
.
I'm always open to trying new things but replacement drinks or foods don't happen that often. Drinking-wise at the moment i quite enjoy Jager Bombs & the occasional local pub special cocktail on top of my usual Smirnoff Ice's, but that's about it. Other drink phases i went through in the past;
1. The Malibu & lemonade phase.
2. The Flaming Sambuca phase.
3. The Jack Daniels & Coke phase.
4. The VK Cherry phase (< yeah that was one of those yack-up-and-put-me-off-for-life ones)
And other drinks i can enjoy: Beers & Lagers as long as they're mild in flavor, a tiny fraction of wines (Port is nice, Champagne is alright), various Bacardi Breezers. Ooo and an amazing Dallas cocktail i tried in Prague
.
But whatever i'm eating or drinking, i always go through phases.

Re: QUIRK-ISMS
Apparently I tend to mumble when I'm thinking dunno if that's anything to do with dyspraxia ,never noticed it my self though.

Re: QUIRK-ISMS
agree! still do this if i eat things like roast dinners! roast potatoes are always the last!
and Tokias86 I also do a similar thing with drinks - but admittedly not as exotically as you
currently if I have a drink it must be a particular red wine called slurp! nothing else will do!

heehee! this just reminded me - i like to have dessert first as i enjoy it more before i'm full! don't often have dessert...but when I do i like it about an hour or two before tea so i can really enjoy it, especially if its chocolate based! chocolate of course being its own food group and wonderful from first thing you wake up to last thing at night...
