Hi

Post by SimonH »

Hi,

My name is Simon, I am 36 and have been diagnosed with dyspraxia, in 2010. I live in Southampton, England, and have recently started actively seeking work, with a disability specialist on the DWP's Work Choices programme. I am very lucky to have this, because the Open University paid for the specialist and provided me with ergonomic equipment and laptop with specialist software.

I currently receive Lower rate disability living allowance for both my mobility and care needs. I also receive a disability premium with my Job Seekers Allowance.

My dyspraxia affected me greatly as a child. It took me 16 months to learn to walk, I had severe mobility problems, most of which I grew out of. I had extensive private tuition when I was 20, and more or less overcame my dyslexia, and achieved a B grade in my English Literature A Level. I also suffer from ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder, so I have real problems concentrating. I have a condition called Synesaethesia, which means I associate colours with words, which seems somehow connected with the dyspraxia. Instead of seeing words I am awash with colours, and different words have different tones of colour, which is one of the more satisfying aspects of my conditions.

However, despite the negatives I have mentioned, I am a happy go lucky fella. I really would like to make new friends who can empathize with my condition - hence my reasons for registering on this forum. I make and keep new friends easily, and have kept friends for 33 years in some cases, because they grew up with me. I don't actually have any friends with dyspraxia.

If anyone wants to drop me a line, then please feel free to do so. Take care all.

Hi Tim,

the Synaesthia I think is due to the severe cognitive impairment I have...I don't really have enough knowledge about it. Other than what I see....

I know Basingstoke quite well having worked as a driver around the town...all the Industrial estates for sure and my sister lived in Brighton Hill for a while before she moved to Tadley.

As for being positive, it's the only way to be. I over came most of my mobility problems through determination, and that really sums up my personality: determined.

Thanks for responding, I have been on a very lonely path trying to get to grips with this condition. My family have all taken time to research the condition, and so have some of my closer friends. I have five sisters and a brother, one of my sisters and my brother have dyslexia: and I think my brother's son has a form of dyspraxia that affects his speech. My dad had two club feet, so disability runs in my family. I suspect my dyspraxia was caused during my mum's labour with me. She was 42 when I was born, in the 1970s, at a time when not many women had children in their 40s.

I was always the clumsy child with an amazing recall of facts: very useful in quizzes...and helped me get my degree. I really would like to broaden my circle of friends so if anyone else wants to add to this post, everyone is more than welcome to.

Synaesthia thats probably realted to dyspraxicia in some way but its the first time I have heard about it so its a first for me :!:
You say that you know Basingstoke well - do you live there or near to?
How do you find driving and dyspraxicia - for me driving really frightens me and I don't even want to drive and I know it might be verry hard if not impossable for me to drive and be safe to myself and others.

Determanation is defunatly somthing which is commen in dyspraxics and somthing that is way above avrage for us so at least that some kind of benerfit.

Its good that your family are doing reashearsh into it - my family did help by providing me with more suported schooling and 6th form and that I am thanckfull for. However they really havent done and reashearsh into it so it is a benerfit when your family finds this infomation out.

I feel that complactions (affaxaction) during my birth controbuted to my dyspraxicia, I feel that there is a defunate link there.
