Hi everyone

Post by Elizabeth »

Hello, I'm Elizabeth from Scotland, aged 36 (and a friend of "Cazzzzy", also new to this site). I've posted a few replies and thought I'd better get around to introducing myself properly.

It has only recently dawned on me that I probably have Dyspraxia, after reading Victoria Biggs' book, "Caged in Chaos". Before this, I'd been confused by the overlap with dyslexia, as I didn't have any of the reading, writing, spelling issues "typical" of dyspraxia, and excelled in English at school/uni. :-s Bigg's points out that, like her, some people with dyspraxia have a particular ability with English/languages (writers like Emily and Charlotte Bronte, Hemingway and Kerouac are thought to have had Dyspraxia, so we're in good company :) ), so I guess it might make sense that I can have most of the other symptoms and still be a big reader.

Up to this point in my life, my self-identity has been as a "Disaster Area", "Scatterbrain", and "ham-fisted" Klutz! I'd mainly point this out before people judged it for themselves  I was perpetually embarrassed  and habitually said "sorry", until I began to not care so much about my clumsiness, in my 30s. Discovering there's a name for what I'm like is something of a revelation, though, like someone saying, "didn't you notice, you've got one less limb than everyone else; that's why things have been tough?"! #-o

Ironically enough, I started to read more about Dyspraxia because I'm responsible at work for training new staff (support workers) about it, so they can help disabled adults who have it! That feels like an even bigger responsibility now, so I want to learn as much as possible from this site.

Actually, like Victoria Biggs, I'd prefer to call Dyspraxia a "learning difference" rather than "difficulty/disability"; not because I don't think it can have a hugely disabling effect on us day to day, but because I'm becoming aware of its benefits, too (such as the verbal intelligence, strategic thinking and caring natures they talk about ;) ) and all that we can achieve in spite of dyspraxia (hey, there was no way I could ride a bike as a kid, but I still learned at an adult class, and love my bike nowadays!) :D

Nice to read your posts, Elizabeth

Hello Elizabeth, great to hear your story!

Like you, I found it really helped to discover why I was different, and why I struggled with certain things. Now, when I have a dippy moment (or day), I can think, yes, but it's because of the dyspraxia ... not that I'm using it as an excuse!! [-(

I'd wondered about reading "caged in chaos" ... from what you've said, it sounds quite insightful, so I may give it a go! Again, like you, I love reading - although I didn't learn to read until my parents paid for a private tutor (almost unheard of in those days) when I was nine.

Hi Elizabeth welcome to the forum

I know exactly what you mean when you say that your life has been a disaster areara and that people end up just judging you for everything which is bad.
Its good that you can see a positive side to dyspraxicia and do want to find out more about it.
