Appropriate work
What jobs would be appropriate for someone with ADHD and Dyspraxia?
Re: Appropriate work
Theres no definite answer to that .A neuropsychologist could say nothing can be definitely ruled in or out but equally that doesn't unambiguously rule enough in. That isn't downright crap that is.
Which is why I think those in what I call the do gooding industry encouraging people who have these things to do (if they are up to it) degrees should get severely warned about that if un/underemployment is just the result.
I have no time for the economic climate excuse as well as if there have never been recessions before and wont be again when as the economist John Maynard Keynes said :"In the long run we are all dead".

Re: Appropriate work
I think the more approapte question would be what do you want to do - then take it from there.

Yeh. Despite my username Dishwasher is 1 of the jobs Im really bad at for obvious reasons. Has anyone else found that ironically having dyspraxia has resulted in them doing jobs that their dyspraxia makes them especially unsuited to? Dyspraxia tends to result in being labelled stupid and so only suited to 'unskilled' work.
(I should emphasise that Ive met a lot of highly intelligent dishwashers who've had to do this type of job for other reasons)

Yes- in an office environment, I've definitely found that having dyspraxia leads to being given 'less demanding' tasks such as filing or data inputting (rather than being given the autonomy to write reports etc), which people with dyspraxia are ironically less likely to succeed at. The most frustrating thing is that being slower and less accurate at tasks such as filing (or dishwashing, as in your example) often seems to result in ignorant line managers deciding that the employee isn't good at anything (which, as we know, is of course not true). I think people who have dyspraxia often get given tasks with less responsibility because of the way they might 'come across' (eg they might have slower speech or hesitant movements), which then causes others (who may in fact be less intelligent than the people they are judging) to decide that they can't be trusted with anything but the crappest of tasks (apologies for swearing, but I feel strongly about this issue). One of the things which makes me most angry about having dyspraxia is the way it seems to lead people to make assumptions about my personality (eg that I am shy or even naive, when I am anything but)- I think this is due to me perhaps having less firm body movements than someone who doesn't have dyspraxia, so some people seem to assume I'm a 'pushover.' Perhaps an organisation such as the Dyspraxia Foundation could have a campaign aimed at raising awareness amongst employers of how easy it is to end up allocating someone with dyspraxia to an inappropriate role, due to assumptions being made about that person's capability before he or she has even started (perhaps a video could be made highlighting how employees with dyspraxia are often treated in the workplace).

Re: Appropriate work
Or a dyspraxic charactor in Eastenders (or whatever) could be good?
Re: Appropriate work
I was just about to reply with soming decent but it got deleated and I can't remember any more
It was somthing like:
- I will / should make a video and youtube account we can use to post videos.
- Employers often take us at face value and then think we are good for nothing, as we know that not allways the case.
- Since I don't think people see me with much difculties they think I am ok - its only later when I start messing thing up that they dont want to know and it seams like i have let them down - its just like
- I worked and studied in the entertainment industury as a lighting technichan (before things got too much and I had to leave due to detarating mental helth and dyspraxicia catching up with me)- I will go back to the industury. This could be considerd a ok job for a dyspraxic person or a compleate nightmare depending on your difculities etc.
