Independent Dyslexia Consultants - anyone used them?
Just got a (no doubt) automated reply from these people today saying that an assessment would cost £450, which I guess is about right.
So, before I splash my uncle's inheritance on this, has anyone used them? Are they legit? Did you get results? This review is all I can find...

Yes they are legit as they tested me and diagnosed my Dyslexia and Dyspraxia and Dr David McLoughlin is one of teh worlds leading experts so well worth the visit
Re: Independent Dyslexia Consultants - anyone used them?
Excellent! Thank you.
Can I plague you with a couple of other questions then...
How long did you have to wait for an appointment/then for a diagnosis?
Is it a one off assessment? (I'm 300 miles from their centre)
Was that the total cost?
Ta!

Hi
I would like to recommend Tim Francis .He is an educational psychologist and really nice. He diagnosed my dyspraxia and dyscalculia. I didn't know what to expect in the assessment, but he made me feel relaxed and explained everything to me.
My University arranged and paid for my assessment. If you wish to contact Tim his number is 01825 766011
His email is childpsych@btinternet.com.

Thanks also! Does he work for IDC?
Just found details about him online. Sounds me like he only diagnoses children from his page. As you've been diagnosed, I'm assuming this isn't the case!

Hi Brad
Tim assesses adults as well as children, by the way I'm 39 years old and had my assessment last week, so my diagnosis is still new to me. I got my full report today, which will be shared with DSA and my Uni Disability Officer.

Hello everyone.
it depends on what you want the diagnosis for. If you are trying to access help on a course, must be at least 50% of a full time HE course, from the DSA Disabled Student Allowance (for support at university, study skills training, organisation training, technology assistance training and hardware/software, mentoring and awareness of how your disability affects your learning and study) then you should use an independent dyslexia consultant such as myself, who is licensed to diagnose dyslexia and dyspraxia and other learning difficulties, who is logged onto the http://www.sasc.org.uk/%28S%28kld4ug55f ... ssors.aspx website, where you have a choice about who you use. Average price £350 You may be able to get an assessment done at your university, who will use the same people, and the university will cover the cost. However, with cuts this grant is being cut back and can be means of your family household tested.
The value of being diagnosed by this group is that they/we do more than just say yes or no, but also give a full picture of your educational profile and the tests that demonstrate where your learning is at at present and where it is likely to be going in the future. Then you can access study skills above mentioned and other training that will help you to offset your learning difficulty, including showing you where your strengths are and weaknesses. Then you most likely will be able to identify a rewarding course of education that helps you to overcome your literacy, organisation and writing/reading difficulties that are holding you back. With such an in depth approach, tutor/assessors/trainers like myself give you a full picture of where to put your energies when learning and where to give up trying because that route to learning does not suit you.
Once you have a diagnosis, you do another assessment for allocation of hours of training and technology (training and software/hardware) at the Needs Assessment Centre (free) and they will make an estimation of how much support you need to do that course, which can be later topped up if thought necessary by the tutor and the assessment officer at the needs assessment. From there your educational institution will advise you to use their tutors, but you are entitled to use an independent tutor from the same list above, or from http://www.patoss-dyslexia.org/APCAPC.html who are the number one tutor register in the uk. Your tutor, the one you chose can offer you the study skills support, the mentoring, and the assistive technology training from one source (like me) or you can access them independently-separately. The tutor you chose will access the paper work easily so there are no extra forms for you to fill in should you chose an independent: that is your choice. Some universities say that you should use the agency the recommend as you are in effect employing your tutor and may be liable for employer tax if the tutor is not registered self-employed. But that is not likely if you use a patoss or sasc registered tutor.
These days you can access a tutor/mentor/strategy trainer from anywhere in the country because we are allowed to use skype for sessions. Or indeed if you go abroad you can keep your UK tutor if its part of your course to go abroad or on swap for a semester.
I'm on facebook if you want to follow my page on DSA Tutoring and Assessment, or email me on aileenhanrahan@yahoo.co.uk to follow my research on how writing development is affected by dyspraxia and dyslexia/dysgraphia. Or we can have a discussion on skype about a course of action.
Best Wishes to you all, Aileen

Re: Independent Dyslexia Consultants - anyone used them?
Sorry, I forgot to add:
dyslexia and dyspraxia often happen together, a 50% overlap (in 50% of cases with dyspraxia). Dyspraxia may go undiagnosed if the dyslexia is first diagnosed.
Attention Deficit Disorder (high-Low) is commonly appearing with the two Ds as well, and anxiety problems. Get some mentoring about managing the way you combine hard/easy tasks, and those skills where your difficulty affects development with other less affected areas.
I have seen huge progress with the right help. Understanding how it affects you and how to develop positive ways forward is a recovery process from the past experience of school.
Good Luck,
Aileen

I can highly recommend IDC for dyslexia assessments.
For adults the dyslexia assessment will use the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale, which is only available to chartered psychologists, usually educational or clinical psychologists. Specialist teachers may also provide assessments although use different assessment scales, as the use of these is regulated.
