Can Dyspraxics get easily confused?

Post by Vier »

Hi.

I was wondering if Dyspraxia is linked with confusion. I get confused easily by others and at times they either misunderstand me or really wonder what I'm talking about. I don't think I know how to convey my words orderly and my thoughts are very sporadic. I think also it's because I'm not so great at multi-tasking, if one person was to tell me two different things to do and four different ways of doing them, I would get confused because I wouldn't know where to start.

I am interested in knowing what others think about this, generally and in relation to communication and practicality.

Thanks Vier

I can get confused quite easily too Vier.

I have ADHD though so it could be due to that, but I find I cannot understand people alot and I can only focus on one thing at a time really. I once got into a rage over a bus timetable of all things. I knew the buses went every twenty minutes at some stupid times like 3 minutes past whatever or 23 minutes past whatever, but the little three minutes meant I couldn't work out in my mind how long it would take to where I was going and which bus to get, to make sure I got there on time. If that makes sense???

I even get confused going to do things here at home because I go into the kitchen to do them....and whoops, I've forgot what I went in for, or, I start doing whatever it was and end up putting things in the wrong places and loosing them easily. Then I will probably drop things or kill them somehow and I get started on sorting that and forget to finish whatever I was doing in the first place.

I often forget things alot too, or for example.....Focus on one particular instruction someone has given me, and not even listen to the rest, and when I come to do the task, well I havent got a clue what to do after that one instruction. Can get me very abgry at times and frustrated with myself too. Does any of this sound familiar?

With talking, I'm not nervous at talking, but say, if I go to a shop and have to ask for something, I will get my other half to do it because I often cant get my words out. I also need a little more time to reply to any question someone might ask, so instead of saying so, I'll often blurt out the first thing that comes into my head instead of thinking about it and saying what I want. I do this because I think I'll look dumb if I dont answer them right away and I sort of panic in my head that I must get some words out asap when really, I probably dont.

I just cant get myself to stand there in silence though, just for those few more seconds while I get my thoughts together and know what I want to say because I guess I fear embarressment. Something which is a whole big deal to me anyway because I often shout things out and make noises and do things that draw attention to myself which makes me want to be swallowed up by a hole in the ground anyway, so I try to avoid talking if I can. I never know what to say anyway at other times either, soooooooooo..........

Hope this helps a little.

Lack of concentration ,poor memory and unable to follow written and verbal instructions is common in dyspraxia. Because of attention deficit disorder we find it hard to concentrate and pay attention to the task we are supposed to be doing, and when we are given verbal instructions find it harder to process the information as quickly we usually forget the first part of what you are told to do before the teacher has finished the latter half and so may have to be repeated several times before it can sink in ,or maybe we cannot simply understand what we have to do in the first place that it just goes right over our heads.
Often going into a room and forgeting what you have come in for is usually a regular occurence and you have to go out again to try remind yourself of what you came in for in the first place.

Yup one of the definitions of dyspraxia is a nurological condition affecting a suffers ability to organise both thoughts and movement, as has been mentioned this can be made worse by conditions that commonly also effect us like ADHD etc.
