Speech
Just thought i'd start a thread about speech, it's probably one of the bigger aspects of my dyspraxia, and probably for many of yous as well. I apologise if there is already threads of this nature but i'm a newbie so just let me off
. Does anyone else have a habit of while speaking, being unable to think of a suitable word to use, so just say a random word? I also have a habit of intending to say something, but it comes out totally different.
Re: Speech
I stammer sometimes, which gets worse when I get nervous, stressed or upset. My speech hasn't been that great since Christmas. It's a bit better today but it was not good on Monday. When I was on the phone at my voluntary work I had a bad speech block and it upset me.
Re: Speech
When I get really upset, I stutter, but I tend not to get upset.

Re: Speech
I occasionally have lazy speech sometimes... where i start talking and then mumble the rest... my mum has to ask me to repeat the last bit i said lol.
Re: Speech
I just drift off or I do the thing where I can't think of the right word and either try to explain what I'm talking about until I can think of the word or I just stick in another word which has a similar meaning but may be comeptelye wrong in the sentence!
Re: Speech
I do that and I have trouble pronouncing some words so I end up stammering
I also can't pronounce my r's correctly
Speech is 70% of my troubles
The rest of my dyspraxia is super super mild

Re: Speech
I just extend explanations unneccessarily. My 'problem' tends to be saying the wrong thing to the wrong person/at the wrong time/in the wrong context.

Re: Speech
I tend to over emphasise odd words in sentences. Someone pointed this out and when I told a friend she said she had always noticed it. But I could talk for Britain
Re: Speech
OH MY

Im affected by:
every last thing you have all said except for the stammering.
yet my speech its self has been quite good and not affected me since i had years and years of speech therapy.
but getting my speech organized is a mega task in its self like you all say add bit of pressure and it can have wide range if reactions

Re: Speech
I also tend to just abandon sentences without finishing them. I find that I know what I want to say to someone in advance but when I start talking to them their interuptions confuse me and I never say all I intended to. I only stammer when I am almost hysterical which is very very rare.
Re: Speech
definitley, sometimes I say things that make no sense to anyone because of it, I tend to mumble alot and I dont speak very clearly but I dont know if this is because of my dyspraxia or something else, I also find it hard to stop talking if im a train of thought or to start talking if im nervours or anxious!
Re: Speech
speech has never been much of a problem for me .. but my son has big problems with speech ... he was about 2 before he talked and then it was only odd words or sentences .. rather than proper conversations .. his speech wasnt always very clear and just didnt seem to flow properly ... as a child he had a lot of speech therapy .. but still has big problems with his speech flowing and isnt great at conversation especially with strangers .. i can see this being a problem soon when it comes to things like going for job interviews etc .. because he tends to just give yes or no answers to questions or just one word answers or short answers rather than sell himself and cant seem to grasp what im meaning when i tell him about this .. also he tends to not appear to concentrate on the person whose talking to him .. looking all round .. rather than at them .. im sure this must give people the impression that he doesnt really want to be there and isnt really bothered .. but again he cant see that its important

Re: Speech
There is a type of verbal dyspraxia which is not forgettng words, etc. which we all have I'm sure but is actually the jaw muscles being that weak that the mouth shifts around and it's hard to understand. It can be very severe. the eye contact is something I have trouble with. I don't look at people when I'm talking because I used to meander when I was a kid and people were forever rolling their eyes or sniggering at me because I didn't make sense. I got so self conscious that I couldn't talk and the same problem crops up at interviews. I was recorded by somone trying to help and when I saw how bad it was I understood. But even now I end up forgetting during the interview or I get so intense I'm basically staring at someone. Again....practice is the only thing to help. I practice with people loads before I go for interviews even now.
