Dyspraxics/ ND People In Graduate Level Jobs

Post by Avarice »

Interested in knowing if people effected by issues here with degrees have got one of those irrespective of wether the job is degree related and how they got there?

Eh? I don't understand the question. Are you asking if the degree is realated to the Dyspraxia? or ar you asking how we got the degree? I got the degree and postgrad through sheer hard work. Didn't have the diagnosis until after I'd done the postgrad when I realised from the work done on the postgrad that that was what I had. I know if I'd been doing a different degree or postgrad that I would have sturggled even more. I've put the idea of doing any more academic work completely out of my head because I'd never be able to cope with working full time and studying. Will stick to doing practical courses that can help me improve my skills for work.

No I simply mean if anyone here that is a graduate has got something like a graduate traineeship or some job that wanted someone with a degree(s).

Even if what they are doing isn't directly related to their subject of study.

Nothing more or less than that.

I'm interested in knowing how they got it.

As a slight digression though in saying you got "your degree and postgrad through sheer hard work" I know EXACTLY what you are talking about and in my case different takes have been given on my thing by educational, occupational and neuropsychlogists.

I don't find the process of academic work (If its essays/presentations/dissertations) easy even if I got good grades and I never felt fully comfortable or able to have much time for anything else.

I got a first in my degree but the psychological motivation for putting the work in was if, armed with at least a 2:1, there could be a BIG pay off for all that work jobwise if an educational psychologist saying I was "university material" wasn't some quack talking out of their backside!

As in "University Material"= Degree based job.

What other logical connotation could or would be infered from that statement?

I think I know what you mean. I have to run out the door so was in a bit of a rush reading your message so could have comepletely the rong end of the stick! All that work that I put into my degree getting a really good result in must subjects was really made no difference in the long run as I didn't do the fourth year and so get paid less than the ones who did even though i got better results that most who did. That wouldn't bother me so much except that the other colleges only had a 3 year degree and anyone who got the same result as I did at that stage would be paid more than me as well. That pisses me off. The other thing to was what you are saying I think. That people just asume it is a piece of cake for me. They assume that I enjoy working all the time and that the reason I spent the whole time studying was becaue I was a swot. The reason I spent the whole time studying was because it took me so long to learn anything and my parents were really hard on me so I had no choice. I ended up being a real perfectionist. Eventually got over that to a certain degree but not fully. Probably more I pretend that I'm over it than really being over it if you understand what I mean.

I think I follow what you are saying here but I think were still think were going a little off at a tangent.

Forget for a moment wether it's a 3 year/4 year degree, masters, PHD or whatever, if some people are paid more or higher up than you with the same qualification(or better) and any ND issue.

What I am interested in knowing is wether and how people here like you and I who have got higher education/university qualifications have got into positions that reflect those qualifications? At whatever level!

(Even if the qualifications aren't directly vocational.)

Has allowance been made for neurodiverse issues as part of the recruitment process and in doing the job or have people just got there in spite of it?

On graduating with a BA Business Studies degree (2:1) I got a place on the Guernsey Government graduate trainee scheme. This was a four year scheme and on completing it I got a job within the Guernsey Government at Guernsey Telecoms as a marketing executive.
