I would really like to join Royal marines so a few months ago I asked weather my dyspraxia would stop me from joining the carrers advisor looked through every medical thing to see if dyspraxia was on there which it is not i mean ok i may find things hard but anything fitness wise i will do and hopefully pass
anyone else agree with me on this?

Personally, I can't imagine a worse job, but that's just me, who's all fluffy and not even remotely military-orientated! I say good luck to you, and let us know how you get on!

I was in the Army. You will find some things very difficultt, some you'll ace at. I found stripping and disassembling weapons very difficult. Map reading and shooting a breeze (I was a marksman and used to have the machine gun)
The difficutly with the Army is the much of the training is about learning 'sequences' of instructions. You have to do everything in a set order and if you deviate from it you get shouted and then you get tense and becomes almost impossible.
I learned weapons drill by going down the armoury when everyone else was in the Naafi and practising till my nails were broken and fingers bleending - then I became blindingly fast. It was unconcious - with no thought involved at all

Air Force or Navy might be better. Something in which your expected to be more of a technocrat/thinker than a frontline warrior.
Plus I think theres more of a can't be a fully regular one of the boys your a w*****r mentality in the army.

Re: HM Forces
Hi Alex,
I'm with Lady Fluff on this one I cant imagine a job Id less like to do or that Id stink at more (plus I have a sever allergy to getting shot at
) .
But you seem really up for it and like I've already said if you want something bad enough you'll get it albanaich is proof of that .
Its gonna be double tough mate its hard enough for most people at the best of times but I think Dyspraxia will make it even more interesting, especially the royal marines their training regime is supposed to be brutal isn't it?
I guess it partly depends on how your Dyspraxia affects you, I couldn't do it cos of my sh*t hand eye co-ordination,fine motor control and poor organisation (not to mention my dislike of being ordered around) but if your Dyspraxia doesn't affect you like that then why not.
I've always thought that one of the only advantages of my disabilities is that I'm exempt from military service (Wooo!!
) but if that's what you want go for it dude.
Good luck .

Re: HM Forces
It depends how your dyspraxia affects you as from my experience it affects us all differently.
My dream was to serve in the navy, unfortunately my dysraxia hindered me from meeting the uniform maintenance standards. it took 3 weeks of training for me to figure this out. How do you cope with push and pull ups as-well? as you will be expected to do alot of these.
Good luck trying though.

Re: HM Forces
I remember reading an old post from someone who said that you cant go in the army if you have Dyspraxia. I certainly wouldn't advise it.Dont know about the other forces though.Having Dyspraxia means your eye hand coordination isn't very good and your accuracy may be off centre.Even something simple as marching in time with the rest of your squad may be difficult to keep in time .
There are so many areas that they like you to be precise and if your not and you let your squad down you may become a target for bullying. If you are sent to a war zone you could end up long hours without sleep causing more stress as you will be on a heightened state of awareness constantly .As dyspraxia is more prone to stress than other people. It is not a job were you can say I have had enough and just go home when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere.Sorry to paint a dismal picture but these are the harsh realities when you join the armed forces. You need to have a really good think about it as the psychological damage can last forever. If you do decide that this is the career for you then good luck.

Oh God good point, I hadn't even thought about that one, wow that would be a complete nightmare !joy wrote:Even something simple as marching in time with the rest of your squad may be difficult to keep in time .
Here's an Idea how about a Dyspraxic marching band ? Complete car crash T.V. but what an awesome you tube video !
Hmm, sorry was that in very bad taste?
