Eating in Public
My partner and I go on cruises from time-to-time. I get so uptight having to eat in a big dining room with tonnes of people. Sometimes we can't get a table to ourselves and have to sit at a big table with 10 other people - I barely eat because people are watching. Even if we are at a table to ourselves, the waiter is around
and notices my messiness and that I cut up all my food before I start eating it (considered bad manners). It makes me too nervous to enjoy the food. Unfortunately, there is rarely finger food that I can order because it is fancier food (when I go out to restaurants with friends, I usually order a hamburger so I don't have to use a fork and knife).
Re: Eating in Public
I completely sympatise as i have to be careful what I bring with me to work as more often than not I spill food on myself at lunch and have to get through the rest of the day with a stain on my shirt! To hell with those people....bad manners me eye. Staring at other people eating would be bad manners too. ignore them and just enjoy the food. you'll never meet these people again if they don't like it they can sit at another table. and as for the waiter....if he is rude don't tip him. I'd imagine the food would be delicious. you've paid for it so you should be entitled to enjoy it. I mean it's not like your dropping food on purpose.
Re: Eating in Public
I completely sympathise and agree with everything you say. I avoid going to restaurants, because I have to pay more attention not to spill drinks and food all over the place than on the food itself, so I don't enjoy it. I do have meals at a friend's place, but he knows me and he is very patient with me. When there are other friends around who don't know me so well, my friend jokes about it before having food. He tends to ask me if he should give me the apron to eat (which he has actually given me when eating pasta with ink squid, as it won't come off the clothes). At school, my colleagues know me and they know that food is going to come off my plate. By the way, a silly joke that our librarian did the other day when some peas came out of my plate: "careful with the escapeas!"

Re: Eating in Public
I used to be petrified of having to eat in public....sometimes now if anyone comes to my home who I know while I'm eating I'll leave the room and eat it in th kitchen or sit on my big pc chair and turn away. They think I'm being funny I think or ignorant but I'm not really. I'm just too scared to eat in front of them because I always make a mess.
When I was younger I used to have social workers come round and also an IT worker (In ....something Therapy) and the social worker would sometimes take me out for something to eat, but the IT worker would take me out every week, I used to hate it when she said about going for food. I used to sit there n eat the tiniest pice of food I could, like quarter of a fry from mac D's, not only because I used to make a mess but because I always end up choking on my food too, more so when I'm tense and stressed actually now I htink about it, but yes.....I used to wait for them to go to the loo or something and cram some in quickly whilst looking round to make sure no one was watching.
Most often I was absolutely starving too you know but I was so scared of looking and feeling like a fool and choking aswel I just couldn't eat right infront of anyone. If I choked it bought attention to me and I hated it and people would laugh or point, or if they were with me say 'steady on' and inside I wish I could have just been swallowed up whole by the ground. It was horrid.
I will eat out now but have to be careful because I tend to eat quickly to get it into me and over with and people dont half give me some evil, nasty looks, like I'm an animal. Add that to when I'm hyper or when I shout things out a lot or make noises then it makes me ten times worse n I'm 30 now and I still feel the hurt, silly aint it really!

Re: Eating in Public
Acutally you reminded me of something. Does anyone just randomly start coughing because they are choaking because they've swallowed the wrong way. I'm not talking about when you'd be eating...I'm talking about sitting there watching Tv and minding my own buisness and the next thing I'm spluttering as if I swallowed a load saliva or something. It's very unnerving.
Re: Eating in Public
Yea I do that too...I think it's when you go to swallow your spit but breath in at the same time and it goes down the wrong hole. It's horrid, I hate it, sometimes the coughing doesn't stop for a while and it hurts my chest because I keep needing to cough so much.agsiul wrote:Acutally you reminded me of something. I wonder if any of you ever eat KFC..... Me and my gf had one earlier this evening as we had been rushing around most of the afternoon and she had to be home for bed because she gets up at four am, and I dont know what the hell it is, but every time I have a KFC zinger box meal I always end up coughing after it too. I mean it's like I keep needing to cough something up, like half a frog in my throat. Unless it's the spices that are doing it because they are quite spicy the Zingers are but yea....Anyone else get that with any foods they can think of?!
Re: Eating in Public
I always choke when I eat. I try and chew my food loads and it still happens.
I dislike eating in public as I'm so messy. Sometimes I go and eat Sushi and trying to use chop sticks is a night mare... I never chose foods that are messy (like spag bol) or hard to cut as I can't use a knife and I'll get my food over me! I dislike it when I eat, its so embarrassing.

Re: Eating in Public
It could be spices. My father would do the same with rice. It could be a reaction to soemthing in the food. I do it with chilly and onions being cooked together. I'd be coffing and spluttering.
