AHEM getting back onto topic of FILMS and the watching of them :P:P:P:P:P:P

I went to see Syriana tonight. Dunno if anyone else has seen it? Id highly recommend it; but it aint a film to relax with- its challenging, complex and bloody hard to understand. However, after a hefty amount of explaining throught the film by my mate =D> iv decided that it was bloody good!!! Its all about oil- the popular (and true) veiw of America sucking Eastern resousces dry, as well as supressing them culturally. Highly recommended as a piece of intellectual entertainment! *looks smart* hee hee :P:P:P:P
Goodbye, and have a pleasant tommorrow!!

I reccommend The Constant Gardener if you want another good political thriller. It's about pharmeceutical testing on the people of Africa. It's very good! Makes you think a lot. =D>

P.S.

Just to clarify, I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic when you were talking about Syriana. Were you saying that it was a smart movie or were you making a sarcastic comment about the American people. I was confused because right before you said that, you were talking about America. And then you were talking about how good of a movie it was and then you said very smart, hee, hee! I wasn't sure if you were talking about the movie or being sarcastic about my country. I hope if you were being sarcastic about my country it was just its government because I do agree that they are pretty dumb!

P.P.S. I'm not offended though, just confused. :-s

I like 'Planes trains and automobiles' with the late John Candy and the current star of Pink Panther Steve Martin, two of my all time favourite actors.
I don't tend to see that many films, I just hate cinemas because of people eating and being noisy.

Just saw V for Vendetta! It was a WONDERFUL film and could apply to some of the issues going on in the world today. I give it 4 stars! =D> Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving were BRILLIANT in it! Also Just saw the Matrix trilogy not too long ago-totally rocked!

I felt Syrinnia was genius. I went to see it with a few of my friends and it's amazing how many little details there are in there. Seriously there were throw away lines that had my friend smiling from ear to ear, which he only understood because he's a lawyer and a few things that the other specialists in the group understood. I think there's maybe one person in the world who could watch that film and get every little thing. You didn't have to understand everything for it all to hold together though, I really like the way in which the different ideas were woven together in that film. It's a rather unusual technique but I like it when it's done well. Another good example is Intacto if anyones seen that?

Spirited away is fairly accessible for the sort of movie that it is. I felt it was kinda nice and feel good. Try 'perfect blue' it's a fair bit darker but is really interesting to watch. I'd also recomment 'princess monokoe' to anyone who's looking to explore that style of film. There are so many manga films out there that I haven't seen, I really must find someone to introduce me to all of them (I didn't like Akira though, that's supposed to be a classic of the genre but I just found it to be a bit boring)

Pirates of the Carribean and V for Vendetta are both fantastic peices of entertainment. Not very thought provoking (The issues in V are raised a lot more succesfully in other peices, it didn't really say anything new) but extremely well produced well put together well scripted peices of entertainment. Also both have very pretty fights :) It's amazing how much good scripting can do for a film, if the dialogs sharp and well delivered a film can get away with most other sins without bothering me. I really liked some of the exchanges in 'phone booth' I felt it was brilliant how well delivered a film could be despite mostly being set in a 2 by 2 by 8 cube :) I wouldn't put it in the same class as V or PotC, it's more a psychological thriller (I hate that phrase but I can't think of a better one) than a 'wayhay fun' piece but I'd still recommend it to anyone.

I've quite a broad taste in films (if it's not already apparent). It's all my friend Andrews fault. Damn his unlimited card and orange wednesdays! With a setup like that how could we -not- go every week?

Random films that are great, that I've not mentioned so far:
Mulholland drive (Favoriate film of all time, me and andrew discussed this forever)
Donnie darko (Not a wasted scene, love how it all fits together)
Galaxy quest (I defy a scifi fan not to think this is hilareous)
Momento (Not the first time the ideas been used, but well executed)
Requiem for a dream (Disturbing but provoking)
Hero (I liked the different perspectives. Also the pretty fighting :P)

Gregs film of the year 2006 (so far):
Brick, it's still in the cinemas, go and see it now! It bills itself as a classic detective story, I'm not sure I'd agree but I see the inspiration. Andrew says that it's very reminiscient of Casablanca, but I've not seen the film in over a decade. I really should rewatch that now my age is in double figures I'd probably appriciate it a lot more. Anyway, whatever it may or may not be brick is great. Go see it.

Greg forgot Rocky Horror! Obviously Rocky is great, but I think of it more as a stage thing.

I'm not sure if you have any other film students on the forum but I've found my opinion of what films are good and what are bad has transformed quite a lot in the 3 years I've been studying film (both at college and uni).

Before that I could rank the 'leave brain at door' style action film as one of my favourite type of genres, now I find them a bit boring.

It's as if I can't watch a film on a purely superficial level anymore, I always have to look at it in terms of all the levels. I'm not saying it is better or worse but you do find you appreciate films in whole new ways.

My favourite films of all time have pretty much stayed the same.

The Blues Brothers - Classic comedy with one of the best car chases ever created

Donnie Darko - My advice is to watch it without ever seeing the director's commentary as that way you can identify the film in 3 justifications that can all mix

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - One of my favourite westerns, anyone ever notice that brad pitt seems to look almost exactly like a young Robert Redford?

The Spider's Stratagem - Bernardo Bertolucci's last film funded by his home country, it's very passive but such a wonderful film that takes it cinematography from the paintings of Rene Magritte.

The Sting - I think this film won an oscar for best scriptand you can see why, it's sharp clever and so so so cool

Fight Club - I was a fan of Chuck Palanhuik before his books were all adapted for film. David Fincher's best film to date IMHO (moreso that Seven) because his trademark visual style gets a real through working and because the more you watch it the more you see a lot of little intricacies.

Grosse Point Blank - It's a bit of a romcom in places and a bit of an action film with a lot of humour in it. Keep an eye out for the best bit of modern farce when 99 red balloons appears as the music.

City of God - this film drags you into their world, makesno apologies for it and you really take up the hopes and fears of the characters. There is a degree of empathy herethat I couldn't believe.

Abres Los Ochos (Open Your Eyes) - Alejandro Amenabar (Director of The Others) made this film as his second film. It was one of the biggest hits in Spanish film's estranged history. It was such a hit Hollywood bought the rights to it, butchered them and put out its terrible remake, Vanilla Sky.

And finally *drumroll*

I watched a film a month ago that won the prize for Orginality of Vision at the Sundance film festival. It was a debut film andmixed the teen highschool genre with that of Film Noir, not just in visual style but also characters/plot/dialogue.

Quite frankly, even with it's weaknesses it's the most intelligent and cool film I've seen in the cinema since Donnie Darko.

It's called Brick and if you have chance, go rent/buy it.

Sorry if it's a bit long but I REALLY love films. Next year ismy first real taste offilm making as my short film script gets made because it was the best in my year.

Wilf

EDIT: Supid Wilf, shoulda read Greg's post about Brick, he does a better job of explaining it than me.
