I have to start job hunting

Post by Miss Jayney »

ihate it, even hunting for temporary part time jobs - there's soemthign so utterly soul destroying about it all!

for starters i've been playing with my Cv and dumbing it down a little to try and get a part time job for a few weeks to get some extra cash to go to North america for a month in May (which shall be awesome0 but it just puts me in such a down mood. i hate writing CVs and i always feel awkward and ebaressed handingout CVs to shops, especially as really only want soemthign for about 6 weeks - which means i'm just goign t have to pretend i want it longer to get soemthign and then leave, the prospect of which makes me twitch - I dislike it immensely1 after America i need to find a job that pays the rent Londonwards (and then hopefully a ton of work experiance to get me into the Media - where want to work) ut it's all so disheartening.

*sigh*

any tips and advice?

Do you have any employment agency's near you, that you could try?

I am green with envy that you are going to North America... would love to go... any room in the suitcase for one more!!!!

Have you any places in mind that you want to visit...

I'm job hunting at the moment and I can confirm that it can certainly be soul destroying. I'm looking for a permanent, dare I say it, 'career' job even, and although some applications are an easy enough where they just need a CV and cover letter, those that require you fill out some faffy application form that essentially mirrors what's on a cover letter and CV anyway can lead down the path towards madness or despair.

However a job offers various enticements, and short of winning the lottery fulfils some basic daily requirements. I'd love to be able to be my own boss in doing something but I'm not sure I've got what it takes for that, so it's down the route of a standard but hopefully interesting and challenging work route.

I need to get full time work soon, as I finish at college. I'm concerned that there isn't many jobs around.

I'm unemployed as of March 30th. I hate my job and can't wait to leave, but I haven't found anything else, yet, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed something will come good soon. I have about 10 jobs I am gonna apply for over the weekend!

There's masses of jobs out there, however when you look for something suitable for you level and abilities than the list becomes a good deal shorter. Unless you go down the recruitment agency route, there's a lot of hunting to be done. I tend to browse the internet as I don't necessarily want work locally.

I am registered with 11 job sites n they email me regularly with jobs that suit me, and they have my cv uploaded so I just hit the apply button. Nothing comes of those very often tho. I have a couple of employment agencies looking for stuff for me, and I've started looking online during my luch break and after work, plus getting the local paper on jobs night. I can't do much more n I still haven't found anything. Frustrating aint it!?! ](*,)

I have registered with a few jobs sites and about 15 employments agencies

I checked the local paper on Thursday since all the jobs which are avaliable are printed and I go into the job centre once a week or if it my signing on week twice, to use the touch screens as I can print out the jobs instead of wasting my toner for the printer

As for feedback from the job which get posted by the companies/employment agencies on these job sites - from my experienced one or two agencies have email me back telling me whether I are sucessfully or would like me to fill out an application form via a company or if I was unsucessfully for the job

I like websites which allowed you to get feedback whether the employment agency got back to you or not in a reasonable amount of time

Added: Quite a frew jobs I have applied for via employment agencies I have been mis-led ](*,) which does not really help

I've been wondering about going down the recruitment agency route. I've used them before for temp work, but not so much for permanent stuff, and when I have they've never come up with anything.

It's difficult as I have some ideas of the sort of jobs I'd be interested in, but these probably don't turn up loads, and it's difficult to know what agencies to approach that might cover the jobs I'm looking for.

So far I've got applications outstanding for jobs throughout the country - a couple of them being speculative. I am thinking of going down the agency route though, so I'd be interested to hear how others get on with them and what sort of job they get from them.

What job sites do people recommend?

hi dan, well my history with recruitment agencies, is hello/goodbye, or hello, tell them what you are looking for, and they say they don't cover driving jobs until I got experiance, or/and my licence.

the weird thing is, I thought that was what recruitment agancies were there for, is to take on the inexperianced! and certainly by what I got told by my driving instructor, so where am I going wrong?

The experience I've had from them is that they're probably handy if you're wanting standard types of job - office work, some specialise in IT. However if you're after anything specific that's in a less clear cut area they either ignore you or suggest jobs that aren't what you're looking for and when you turn them down you never hear from them again. There may well be better ones out there, tho.

I have a good amount of experience and understanding with employment agencies

The job I am looking is office work but is quite specific for what I am looking

I am not sure whether this has been said before on the forum but most of the office jobs , companies are not really prepar to give much training if it a temporary position as there are more likely looking for people who have the skills the job requires

I have only turned down a few jobs at employment agencies - one or two are still looking for me, some have been a quite hello/goodbye down to experience and were quite rude about it towards me, but most have been fine about my lack of experience in working

I had an interview for a local job this past week but I didn't get the job, so I'm going to try my luck with some temp work now until I get my driving out of the way, which should in turn boost my possibilities.

What do people feel about the whole life-work balance? Is anyone pursuing a simple life or avoiding the rat race at the expense of a flash salary and a heap of stress?

I find it difficult to find the balance I want as too simpler job I might find boring and repetitive quite quickly, but at the same time I'm none too sure I want a load of hassle and stress either, even if the pay is quite decent. It's a bit frustrating as I feel I could tackle complex matters in some sense, but my brain lets me down in being able to handle other simpler aspects of jobs, meaning that I'm likely to face a job that's more simple than I might necessarily want or one that's challenging enough but which I find very difficult to cope with in other respects.

The search continues!

I guess i am avoiding the rat-race. i don't think i would survive working in an office in the city if that makes any sense.

so many of my friends have to finish a certain case-load of work per day. i don't think i would really do well in that sort of environment. where it is heaviliy focussed on just quantity of work.

In a way my job is a quite non-mainstream. i feel that i have a lot of independence and a nice enough work-life balance. it was an unadvertised position so was the only person they interviewed. i was very down-hearted about finding a job and it gave me a bit of hope when i found this. i really enjoy it too. However, i have recently been insulted about my job. someone pretty much told me the other day that it was 'not a career path' and that i am 'going nowhere'. despite the fact that other people have been very positive about what i do, i was very hurt... this guy never even knew me so was a bit out of line. but being the very sensitive and on occasion not-so-confident-about-my-abilities person that I am, it really shook me up. I really empathise about this whole job world business. i think as a group it is just so much harder for us to find the right environment. most people just don't get that though. This whole job thing is tough!
