dyspraxia and the call centre

Post by ALADDIN »

I have worked in a call, centre for almost 1 year. I am not the best person. They took people off the street. They allowed me 1 week to settle down !!!

I worked for a market research company last year, it was a horrible experience. I did not do well. I found the instructions too fast.
My supervisor was horrible to me !! I had a poor grading. I declared that I had dyspraxia. I was given no support. It was a disorganised zoo.

This year, I retrained, I had a different team leader. On the first shift, I did not do well because I take time to settle down.

The next day, I did 4 interviews (the target was at least 5). I had my shift cancelled on the next day. I was a given a good grading. I am slow, there are lots of questions of variable length, the telephone calls were between 12 minutes and 19 minutes long. I tried very hard. The supervisor who trained me last year was horrible to me about satisfying targets.

Is it my dyspraxia ?

I was told that I had dyspraxia in 2002 after attending speech therapy but I am not allowed a diagnosis on the N.H.S. I have aspergers traits but my dyspraxia is much worse. The support is very poor.

DANDA is great. The only other work is the occasional Maths tutoring since the recession. The UK treats graduates like dirt

seems like when people with our disorder say we have it,others think its and excuse, best job would be one on one, behind the scenes where if you make a mistake, its fixable and you have that time to do so....

Call centre or not if yo uhave a diagnosis you have a disabilty and are protected under DDA . Kick arse with this it means they have to take measures if not they get taken to court .

I recognize myself. I worked at a call center two weeks last summer. The job was about selling magazines to companies and I worked six hours, five days a week. I had two weeks of trial and in the beginnig the boss was satisfied because he thought I sounded good on the phone. But, after a week it was expected that I would have come into practice and start selling. I did not. While, I thought it was nice to talk to so many different people, but I did not sell any magazines because I always forgot what to say. I had a paper with a template that I could follow but than I could not talk as fast as I needed because I got stressed about having to read and talk at the same time.

Maybe I could have done the job well if I had been allowed to work in a slower tempo, and if I had had a longer learning period. Unfortunately, the most employers require you to learn everything very quickly. You get a week, max two, then you should be able to work independently and without difficulties :(

I can handle the call centre work. I have made big improvements. I am not the best person in the work. They did not dismiss me. I have a slight problem with change and communication but I overcame the barrier in the 2nd shift.

The DDA is weak especially for dyspraxia. What reasonable adjustments can be made to support me ? Reasonable adjustments for aspergers suffers would including isolating a person, changing the work, sending updates, providing information. I love socialising, I am working in a call centre (I have to meet targets), I get no support for aspergers.

Well as your not a qualified OT / HR or Work therapist that not down to you to make that decision or your work. The DDA is very strong (i know as im suing my ex company who used to thing the same way silly people). the Law states any disability must be looked at and professionals brought into make a responsible adjustment to make your job as less stress full and detrimental as possible (Both Auspergers and Dyspraxia (covered as Dyslexia in law ) are covered.

A good example for call center , you get a few extra breaks from others , speech to text computer software or a recorder for taking notes . Business targets are not protected by law your welfare is .

Give the guy in the link a call , he does no win no fee and is one of the top solicitors in the country .

They can stop giving me work, temporarily or permanently if I hassel them. The work is casual with no guarantee of work. The only other work I can is the occasional Maths tutoring.

The market research company is a private sector company, the public sector and not for profit organisations are more relaxed. The market research company is a business.

No they can't if yo uhave any form of wokr contract with them that is discrimination on the grounds of your disability.

I worked in teh City for about 11 years , private companies oddly the large scale ones (i worked for HVB , JPMORGAN ) are better on their HR and what they will do . If your company is treating you in this was please give John a call , its wrong , they are breaking the law . Private sector dont get away with things any more then Public , all you need is help with the legal side and they will ahve to change their ways . If they fold well tought someone takes their place . Its how business works. Private sector peopel /companies fear being disposable as much as they try and make you feel you are . If taht was they case they would kick you out the door soon as , which they cannot do.

If someone wants to play around with you resibricate bullies do crumble when confronted .
