Brain cuts out?

Post by Poppy91 »

Hello!

So I have had this problem for years but have never managed to get any sort of diagnosis. When I try and do a sequence of movements, be it a dance routine or writing a long word that I am unsure how to spell, my brain sometimes 'cuts out' for about half a second and I get a small spasm in my hands. Doctors have described them as myoclonus or mini seizures but nothing definitive, I am due to get an EEG soon (I had one years go with no luck). I have no idea if this is related to Dyspraxia but it sure as hell makes everything 10x harder!! Is it worth me discussing Dyspraxia with my doctor as possibly related? I have never been diagnosed with Dyspraxia (I am 100% sure I am) but don't want to come across as if I am a panicker trying to self-diagnose when I am already going through these other tests already!

Has anyone else ever experienced this??

Thanks :)

Occasionally when trying to speak to people my brain seems to just freeze over and I pause trying to find the right word as nothing seems to come through, it can be embarrassing. This happens when doing things too. Sometimes I'm doing something and then I just stare into space as my mind goes blank. I would say it isn't an uncommon thing to happen based on my experience. I would say it would be good to speak to your doctor about arranging a diagnosis, just tell them you've noticed certain patterns of behavior in yourself and they'll probably suspect it's dyspraxia. Or something like that. Hope this helps.

Hi Poppy and welcome.

I would couch it in terms of "is there any mention in my medical notes of Dyspraxia, DCD or Clumsy Child Syndrome?

if possible be ready to provide some examples of things you struggle with in day to day activities and if possible print and complete a self assessment questionnaire. Typically you may be referred to a neurologist in the first instance but you'll likely need to be paraded past a variety of specialists on the road to formal diagnosis as Dyspraxia seems to be a diagnosis of near last resort, once everything else has been ruled out.

To be honest, I'd be surprised if there's many of us on this forum who don't experience from time to time.

I personally am especially prone to a good brain freeze when tired and overloaded.
