Vestibular System

Post by Jenny3142 »

so - aha moment. As I mentioned in the transport forum after my hearing loss on Saturday that I went to the ENT who checked me out and it seems my vestibular system is off. He did the Fukuda stepping test and also checked my saccadic eye movement. I have an appointment to have a VNG test in February to further check my saccades.

Reading up about saccades lead me to this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_movement_in_reading
This was interesting for me as I am a very slow reader (~100WPM and not very accurate) - I strongly suspect dyslexia, and I´m diagnosed with ADD.

I also came across this whilst researching:
Vestibular disorders not only profoundly affect adults, but also children. Once thought to be exceptionally rare, pediatric vestibular disorders are receiving increasing attention from clinicians as an overlooked problem. In addition to impairments of motor development and balance, vestibular deficits may cause poor gaze stability that inhibits children from learning to read. Despite new awareness of pediatric vestibular disorders, children are currently not typically screened for them, and as a result frequently fail to receive medical treatment.

Hi Jenny,

I've been meaning to write a post on this topic for a while. Your post has prompted me to do this.

I have been using a system called Original Strength for about three months. This system is based on a theory that by doing infant movements such as rocking, rolling and crawling, an adult can reset both their body and vestibular system.

Since using this system, I have noticed an improvement in my previously weak and floppy joints. I also think my mind is functioning better. Of course I don't want to claim this system is a cure all for everything, especially as I only have rather ordinary dyspraxic symptoms. Nonetheless, I think it's worth a shot since it doesn't cost a penny to try them out and no equipment is needed.

These are the three core original strength movements.
1 Rolling floss (aim to build up to about 50 rolls on each side)

2 Baby Crawl (aim to build up to 10 minutes non-stop)

3 Commando Rocking (aim to build up to 5 minutes non-stop).

You're very welcome, Tom.

I hope it of of interest to a few members of this site but of course, I don't want to put everyone off with over zealous enthusiasm!

I should mention that there are a lot more youtube videos on the Original Strength system, including the theory behind the system as well as other movements. The founder of Original Strength, Tim Anderson and his associates are quite generous at giving out information for free.

I just picked out three core movements, which I think are a good starting place.

I thought I should update this post. I went back for the tests and was told my right side system was 57% worse than my left, but that it is considered normal up to 80-90%. Dr said everything is fine with my inner ear. After the tests, I still failed the stepping test. He said it is likely a physical problem.
I have an appointment with the Rheumatology clinic in October due to joint and muscle problems.

and a last update from me. I was at the Rheumatology clinic a month ago and I´ve just gotten the report. I have spinal degeneration lumbar + thoracic (they didn´t x-ray my cervical, but from my symptoms I suspect there is degeneration there as well).
From my research this is what is pulling me off balance. It can also trap and compress nerves. Anyway, I have to have an MRI of my entire spine to find out precisely whats going on.
I guess this is why things have been getting worse of late. I mean I was always a clumsy kid with no sense of balance, but now I have days that I can barely even walk. :/

I am sorry Jenny I know another dyspraxic who has had similar physical disabilities all his life.

These conditions can be complex but hopefully with modern systems on investigation like MRI scans diagnosis is becoming quicker and more reliable and remedies easier to find or at least amelioration.

thanks for writing here - I wish you well with the treatment.
