Hi
I work in a school as a special care counselor and i have been assigned to support a young teenager (11 yr) diagnosed with dyspraxia. It is my first case of dyspraxia.
I have read lots of stuff on the internet but still i have tons of questions and absolutely no clue how i can be helpful to that girl.
So here i am, on this forum asking (i beleive) the right people who understand better than me what it is best thing to do to help someone with dyspraxia especially in a highschool environment.
Here are the list of things i need to know before i can ask more specific questions:
- Should the helper (me) hang out with her as much as possible in front of her classmate ? like sitting next to her while she studies ? or should i stay away from her (keeping a low profile) and let her work alone as much as possible...without too much interfering... which do you think is best ?
- Should i ease her homeworks given by teachers by dividing paragraphs and sentences ? or should i just leave the original pages alone and let her do the exact same thing as the rest of the class ?
- The girl doesn't seem to hang alot with the rest and doesn't seem to have many friends... should i arrange some sort of moments to make her talk with the other...knowing that they may treat her differently (in the worst case reject her)... would you like to be introduced to random people ? did you enjoy being alone when you were in highschool ?
- The girl i am helping is allowed to use a computer in all her courses. Do you think it is a good idea to have a computer all the time? if we decide to do that she will be the only persone allowed to use a computer.
And in which way a computer could be helpful ?
- What should i do if i ask her to do something and she doesn't want... i understand that we have to be very patient.. and not to take it as a behavior or an attitude.. is it true ?
The mother is also pushing her daughter alot "she wants the best for her daugther" and i can undertand that but should i slow down the mother or should i back her up and push her daughtrer to work hard ?
Any hints you guys can tell me to help this girl living a normal life in her highschool will be very appreciated.
How can i support the best i can... ?
