Let me introduce myself...

Post by Kirstyg »

Hi, im Kirsty, I am a mature optometry (40) student based in the south-west (UK). I was diagnosed with Dyspraxia as well as Dyslexia and Sensory processing difficulties in October this year. It has been a lot to get my head around as, probably like some others, i didn't know i was different to the average Joe. Its only now i realise that most other people dont struggle in the same ways i have. So now im trying to determine which of my issues are dyspraxic and which are the dyslexia or ssd issues and this is why i joined the group. Thanks for reading and thanks to everyone who shares their experiences.

Hi Kirsty and welcome

I'm also from SW (Gloucester) and have Dyspraxia /dyspraxic tendencies. You'll see from looking at posts here that we're a pretty diverse lot and our condition(s) present in different ways. We face different challenges with all kinds of tasks so it can be hard to define what' a dyspraxic 'dyslexic SPD or me or you thing is. Please remember you are you and while your conditions are a part of you, they need or shd not define you absolutely.

I'm visually impaired/dyspraxic and always find eye tests difficult as to me it is hard to see the difference between the effect of the different lenses they use when performing eye tests so much so I have not had an eye test for sometime, yet I'm conscious I ought to. Interested to know what are your thoughts in this regard?

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply and comments. I will bear what you said in mind, thank you.

It must be so frustrating for you to have visual impairment but find the testing process so difficult. The first things that spring to mind are... youre right, you do need to still have your eyes tested regularly. So, depending on your visual impairment, yearly, failing that, certainly every 2 years. Not just to help correct your vision but also to have the health of your visual system checked. So much can be picked up through your eye test. Very often the changes the optometrist makes when trying different lenses is minimal and its very often difficult to tell much difference. But this does mean theyre so close to the right prescription that the changes are hard to detect. Id speak to the optometrist and explain your difficulties and see what they advise. I am not yet qualified so have limited knowledge. I think when i understand optometry and dyspraxia more i will be able to understand how it affects our vision and visual perception. I plan to specialise in how dyslexia, visual stress, dyspraxia etc affect vision and ways to support this, when i qualify. I will, in the meantime, speak with lecturers and see what more i can find out. I will get back to you. :)

Kirsty
Thank You. It's not as if I have to pay as I'm a DSE user so can get a voucher to pay for eye test, and towards any prescription too.
