It's me!
Let me introduce myself. My name is Ruth and I'm a 32 year old mother of 2 beautiful girls. I also have a marvelous husband called Dan. When my girls got old enough to go to school I enrolled ona degree course at the University of Reading, ( I used to be an optician!!) The course is Landscape Management and it's fab.
I never did very well in exams, I failed my A levels completely and struggled to pass my professional qualifications. I am a qualified Dispensing optician ,except the profession decided we had to call ourselves Opticians. I think it's confusing but there you go. ANYWAY cos I'm no good at exams I asked if I could sit in a small room, formal exam halls FREAK ME OUT. University said Yes! but only if I had an assesment.
So along I go not really sure what I was being assesed for and this very nise lady psychologist spent 2 hours doing lots of weird and wonderful tests - which I'm sure you're all familiar with. I was so pooped by the end she said come back next week to dicuss the results. I was cunvinced she was going to say I couldn't have a little room. Instead she said ' You have Dyspraxia' Imagine my surprise!!
That was last year. It has been such a relief to finally understand what on earth is going on with me. Why I got lost in a town I've lived in for 15 years. Why I loose EVERYTHING! why my memory doesn't work properly. Why I can't stand to have sore feet, why I have to have a duvet on no matter how hot it is. Why I can't stand the sound of metal on metal( aat least I think I can include that one) and why escalators scare me.
The level of self exceptance the information has brought has been extreemly liberating I'm not stupid or weird. I'm special!
In trying to learn about Dyspraxia I have found 2 fab web sites Matts hideout and Dyspraxic teen index. I've been loitering around picking up increadably useful help and tips but I worried about being so old! I'm so glad this is here now hooray
Blimey I am going on a bit so to skip to the end. Uni is going well I'm getting good grades and i'm looking forward to being able to discuss being Dyspraxic with other Dyspraxics going through the same sort of stuff.
Look forward to hearing from you

Welcome to the forum Ruth!
Sounds like you're doing an commendable job of juggling motherhood and education! I take it from the fact you're studying Landscape Management that you're possibly looking in a change of career from being an optician?
It's excellent news that you managed to get assessed. If I may ask, how did you get your assessment? Was it arranged by your University? Knowing about dyspraxic does certainly make a lot of things fall in place and make sense doesn't it?

Strange that because I can't go to sleep unless their is something on top of me either like a sheet or duvet.
Emma,
The reason I was asking about being assessed is that it seems to be relatively straight-forward to get assessed at Uni, whereas it's a long up-hill struggle if you're not in education. It was just in case Ruth had come across a path to assessment that others could follow, however I suspect it's likely it was arranged through the Uni.

Aw so nice to hear from you all!!
It was very straight forward getting assesed at uni Daniel. I didn't even realise what I was being assesed for! I saw a Chartered Psychologist who I think has a private practise as well. I must go and see her and I'll ask if she sees non uni folk and how to do it shall I ? And yes gone off being an optician. want to be out in the sunshine, hopefully with less pressue!
Danni - isn't it fun having kids too!! The school run is HILARIOUS . lets start a thread and compare notes?

Hi Ruth,
It must have been hard going through life up until last year with Dyspraxia and never being diagnosed. is how you must have felt, I would have thought?
I'm not a fan of exams, although some of my grades suggest otherwise, which really confuses me, as I rarely think I've done well in them.
I prefer the coursework option, as you can write the work get the lecturers opinion and then perfect it.
I explain my Dyspraxia in this way, I can see something and it's in my head. I just can't get it onto paper. (I think someone else described it in the same way on the forum?)
There are some things I just don't get and struggle to understand, mainly technical processes. The workings of a tv, camera etc.
David
If there's any specific Dyspraxia questions you want to ask me, feel free to do so and I'll do my best to help.
