Hi everyone,
I have been having some problems at work, I teach one day a week, although this is not my main job, I have been given a written warning after 4 bad observations. I went to the doctors and gave her a list of how I felt I had the Dyspraxia, and how it was affecting me. She referred me to an OT, who later visited me at home. Unfortunately, the OT had no background or expertise in Dyspraxia, and could not diagnose one way or the other. She watched me make a cup of tea - That was it!!
She said that my doctor needs to spend a little more money getting someone who specialises in this area, as there are not many OTs that understand dyspraxia, and that she would make a recommendation on this basis.
What should I do next? Go back to my doctor? Not sure what the next step is, or if I will ever get diagnosed
Cant get the right assessment

Hi Sue
Sorry to read of your frustration. Definitely worth a return visit to your GP to discuss the next steps and to follow up on the recommendation the OT makes re the need to find an assessor who specialises more with dyspraxia. You might wish to try the Dyspraxia Foundation's helpline Mon - Fri 01462 454986) as they might be able to make suggestions on what to ask your GP for next. Most individuals who specialise/can diagnose seem to only work with children or young adults.

With regard to the written warning, It could be worth further discussion with this part time employer. Have you mentioned to them that you believe you have dyspraxia. As an employer they have a duty of care and should be offering at some level of help/support to maintain/improve delivery/performance, even if you are not yet formally diagnosed and only work for them one day a week. They may even be able to suggest possible contacts.

Re: Cant get the right assessment
Thank you Tom, I have appealed against my written warning on those very grounds. Will ring the doctors tomorrow, I've been procrastinating long enough.
Sue.
