dyspraxia traits all my life

Post by simon_shaw »

Hi everyone,
I have been diagnosed with dyspraxia and have all my life feeling a complete failure. At school I went to kick a ball missed and boys laughted at me. I did nt have many friends as a child but as I got older I got braver and thought ok if I don't kick a ball not the end of the world. I found I was a good artist despite having awful handwriting and still have but I learnt to type. Being able to draw gave me confidence and I joined an art club and made friends there. School was never a happy place as I am so disorganised in work and in myself - always used to lose things. But things started to get better as I looked more and more on the net for help. I learned coping strategies and just recently had an assessment as I am a mature student at uni, got the DSA allowance and now at last got the proper help from learning support - they have shown me how to plan what I want to say and helped me with Gannt charts which takes the hassle out of organising myself. Life is better and I wasn't keen on school at all as I found everything so hard. Chin up guys and gals, life is better with the right help but get assessed - don't delay - doctors didn't help me at all I am afraid as I never got an appointment with a specialist but found someone on the net and got an assessment with her.
Best thing I ever did and now enjoying or trying to enjoy my degree - hard work but have made some great friends. Smile life can be good.

Simon

Welcome

I've seen gant? charts but never had much inclination into finding out how they work, other than they seem to measure where things are on specific phases of a project?

I too am pretty rubbish at most sport related things and am better at not caring now. My humiliation on the school sports field came during a rounders game, but lets not go there.

I know he feeling well! I used to get bullied a lot at school, and was very bad at sport, riding a bike etc, but on the plus side I had quite a lot of friends so was lucky there.

It's been brilliant getting an assessment as it's changed my life and gradually I am not beating myself up so much as I used to. I still feel an idiot a lot of the time though! I know I shouldn't say that but it's how I feel. It is such a relief to have got the diagnosis though but had to fight quite hard to get it.

I'm just interested what are Gantt charts? The lack of organisation is the worst thing about my dyspraxia. I am forever losing things like keys and forgetting things. I write to do lists and the. Can't find them! Yet weirdly I have a good memory for birthdays, facts, reigns of the kings of England - useful stuff like that !! My dad is similar, although he is practical but dyslexic.

Thanks for all the info on here it is great after so many years to finally meet people who really understand! If only d
I'd known about this twenty or more years ago it would have saved me a lot of grief! But the good side is I'm now working with people with learning disabilities so it's helpful to know this stuff now.
