DSA application through NHS

Post by LuluJeanne »

Hi there,

Im Lulu, newbie here :)

Im just wondering if anyone on here has applied for Disabled Students Allowance through the NHS bursary scheme (that would be if youve studied Nursing,Midwifery,Social work etc etc)

How long does the application process take, and what does it involve :-k
Do they assess you at uni, or is your university responcible for assessing you...

My university seems to be shedding no light on this situation for me at all. Not a good start!

Thanks.

Hi Lulu

You need to contact your Universities disability officer and they get the ball rolling. You can either download an application from student Finance England or the Disability officer can give you the form , make sure you have the correct evidence from you doctor , Ed psychologist or whoever diagnosed your disability. Send in your form as quickly as possible as it takes a couple of months for the whole process of getting services and equipment to come through.

The process involves Student finance England, checking your evidence, arranging for you to be assessed, that is if your evidence is accepted !, you have to wait for your assessment report to come through, to student finance England then you have another couple of weeks for student finance to accept the report, when that is approved you'l receive your services or equipment.

All the best with your application OK

Oh Lulu, I forgot to add the assessment is done independently at an assessment centre, which could be at another university or independent assessment centre approved by Student Finance England. The assessors are independent officials as well, this prevents conflict of interest.

Hi sarahlouise22

You can apply for Disabled student allowance anytime, however they do encourage you to apply early before the term as it can take 3 months to process the application and get the help you need.

I don't understand why you've been refered to a neurologist if you are at Uni, Your disability officer can refer you to an educational psychologist to be assessed.

Yeah but they wont assess you till your at university.... hense why im trying to get assessed somewhere else. I got referred to another area something in mental whatever carnt remember what it said... but when i rung up not long ago they told me they rejected it.. and said neurology was where i should go.. so then they booked me an appointment.. i just hope this will be the right place... cos i feel like im being pushed pillar to post... and if this happens it will be even longer before i recieve anything. if it takes 3 months.. i will be waiting even longer.
