How to get a diagnosis/assessment

I am living in the US and wondering where I should go to get an assessment. Would I visit a general physician, a psychologist, or some other professional? And how much does it usually cost? I am rather short on cash at this moment, but I believe that getting an assessment would help.

Hopefully, one of the US members on the site could help you on how diagnosis is done in the states. I would imagine you would have to pay for it privately, unless you have medical insurance which might cover the assessment.
