Acess To Work

Post by shepo »

Hi people, I just wondered if anyone here claims transport costs through the job centre. I currently live in a small vilage just outside of scarborough, and I have just applied for a job outside 15 miles away from the town centre. I heard there was a fund availiable to help me pay for taxis and transport - I asked at the Jobcentre last week and they told me that this fund was only availiable if I was signed on to Jobseekers allowance. I am currently doing some relief work (working when someone is sick or goes on holiday) which means that some weeks I am busy but some I am not.

Any ideas would be helpful.

cheers

I don't know the answer I'm afraid, but I would hope that it would be possible for those who are unable to drive on medical grounds to be able to claim some form of assistance.

If you cant drive on medical grounds you are entitled to access to work. If you apply for the access to work before you start work they pay 100% of your transport costs, however if you are already working at the job when you apply they pay 80%. Still, its much better than a kick in the teeth.

In Scotland, if for any reason you cannot drive, or are an OAP you can get a Bus pass that allows you to travel anywhere in Scotland for free but I'm not sure about England and Wales though... you'd need to contact your local council about it.

You can here too, but dyspraxia is NOT a condition that this is valid for. I have mine due to epilepsy. If everyone could write to their MPs regarding this, we may be able to get a change in the law in place.

Maybe we should get together and do a petition and/or put a standard letter on the website for anyone to download and send to their MP. What are everyones thought?

yeah they do bus passes anywhere in Wales, but need to get medium/high rate mobility DLA, or low rate if you get a note off the doctor (but they will not tell you that), they will just say no. you aren't entitled.
