I drive an manual gearshift car and haven't had any problems with it.
Must say that in Belgium for being able to drive on your own with a learners permit you have to take at least 20 hours of lessons (10x2h) with a driving school
I think that helped me a lot because the teachers are used to bad drivers
and keep calm even when you're losing it.
They also know a lot of tricks and focus on the stuff you're struggling with.
I think driving on my own has a lot of advantages because I get less distracted when there's no one talking to me, blocking my vision or shouting "watch out"
I still prefer to drive on my own and if I do have passengers, to not talk to them because it distracts me.
Talking on the phone (bleutooth handsfree) also distracts me so I try to avoid this or keep the coversation short.
I can't multitask so I need a GPS if I go somewhere I don't go on a weekly basis.
I had to go to the USA a lot for work and over there most cars are automatic.
The switch to automatic is easy, just don't use your left foot.
I always put my left foot on the footrest that's usually provided.
Switching back to manual however always causes me more trouble.
I takes me a while to remember to shift:
"why is the engine revving, oh right I have to shift"
