Making friends

Post by mynameis » Sun Aug 14, 2016 11:51 am

I have few friends at home where I live during the summer although I've recently met some about an hour away. I just want to find out if anyone else finds it difficult making friends. It was particularly difficult yesterday because my new group of friends knows each other quite well but I don't so I can't keep up when they're reminiscing. My main worry at the moment though is going back to university in a month and a half because I don't want the memory of how shy I used to be around friends and people in general to distract me from being as sociable as I know I can be. Any advice is appreciated.

I had a similar problem recently; I spent the last six years in one school and only became good at making friends a year ago - about five years too late.

But last summer something finally clicked and I realised how to make friends with people I had never met. Basically (the way I see it), speak to them the same way you would if you were already friends! Make it appear that you're comfortable with them and they'll warm up to you much more quickly.

I also saw some advice the other day to try and notice someone's eye colour the first time you meet them - you'll be making eye contact, but it won't feel that awkward because you have an agency

Of course, this only works for meeting new people, and there's more work involved in the rest of the relationship, but this provides a good base. Good luck!
