mental health

Post by cazzzzy »

i just wondered how many folk out there suffer with mental health issues ?,i know it is linked with dyspraxia but how much does it effect your life ?
i suffer badly with depression, low self essteme, panic attacts and suicidal thoughs...which takes over my daily life,i have done CBT which has really helped and i really try not to let it take over my life and luckily it is getting better but it takes a lot of hard work each day,i also have suffered with bulemia and alcohol dependancy,i suppose in some way i must be pretty stronge as i have delt with these issues and seem to be getting better and with the fact i only found out in june i have dyspraxia i think i've done well :) .....

so just wanted to see how other folk deal with these issues or if they have been lucky enough not to have these issues

cheers caz

I've sufffered with anxiety and depression on and off since my teenage years. (I'm 27 now) I've never had CBT but I've thought about having it.

After leaving unie I have sufferd gratly with axianty, depreshion and low self esteem (however that has been a on going issue for a long time).

I am referied to a mental helth clinic and have been in contact with the local NHS mental helth services and through genral counceling and CBT it really has helped but I am not through it yet - it takes a lot of hard work.

I have found CBT usefull but only when you put the effort in otherwize its just useless - this is often the case with many mental helth treatments which are long term solutions - like dealing with the effects of dyspraxicia - you have to put the effort in to get somthing out but it will be worth it in the end.
I am not saying its a miricial cure but its desinged to make your cope better and hopefully see things in a diffrent and more healthy way.

P.s. what does this have to do in the 'relationship' section - is there anything your missing out or wanting to inculde?

It can get in the way of frends and relationships massivley as it can just consume you and thats all that is your life and there is no time for everyhting else. - It needs a lot of strengh to get out of this and then once your improving you need the right person and your commitment to keep in a relationship. So yes it does affect things but it dosent mean that there is no hope beceuse if you find the right person then there can be hope.

I personaly think that beceuse of oure issues we arnt suted to 'normal' people and should look withen oure own comunity - that way your lickly to find somone who understands and you can have a better relationship with.

Ive been through some really severe depression and i think a lot of the solution can be trying to find the one thing you really love or dream of and finding a way to make your life incorporate that thing as much as possible, as work or just a hobby.

I have done artwork and poetry at some points, that really helped as its a time where you release all the frustration and bad stuff into something creative. (Even if you cant draw very well, just go a bit crazy on the paper and you'll probably end up with a private masterpiece!)

The other big thing for me is fresh air and the gym, exercise releases endorphins which are better than the best anti-depressants you will ever find.

Things are still gonna be hard, but at least if youve released a lot of the bad stuff you can think more clearly about your problems.

No offence but you make it sound as if we're a completely different race! Our difficultys don't make it impossible to find someone outside "our community" if you put yourself out there and try you can easily find someone who suits you with a learning difficulty or not and just because we're dyspraxic does not mean that we are not normal. You'd also be surprised how many people have problems like ours and can relate.

Mental health describes a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of a mental disorder. From the perspective of 'positive psychology' or 'holism', mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life, and create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.

Mental Health is necessary to maintain because health is wealth and without a good health we cannot do anything and can't concentrate on work very well.

Florjan I am not being funny but have you had depreshion or known somone with depreshion.
I would love for your idea to be true but unforanlty it really isent. - Depreshion like other mental illness is really tough and it eates you up and can consume you and thoes around you and can drive people to sueside.

Dealing with it isent as simple as talking things through with family, some may not have family or there family don't want to know or they don't want to talk about it to there family.
Talking to the right people - friends, thearpests etc does help as well as thearpy such as counceling, CBT (cognitive behaviour thearpy), CAT (cognitive analiticial thearpy) etc. Meadaction also plays a role and more invaices thearpy such as being sectiond and ECT (electic convolsitive thearpy) may be needed.

Often with depreshion it dosent go away complealty and people who have sufferd depreshion are prone to it and sometimes its cronic and a disorder (like dyspraxicia) which will allways be with you (i.e. bi poler disorder).

If you need more infomation and education about depreshion check out - http://www.mind.org.uk/help/diagnoses_a ... depression

I also suffered by this problem. It was so disgusting moment for me. It effects a lot in my life. I couldn't anything properly in the meantime. Depression is so bad thing to suffer, as it hamper all the days activities.
I'm happy now to control it somehow. :)

What is and who is a normal person? I'm sorry, but aren't we all individuals?

Irrespective of any learning difficulty, disability or mental health issues no two people are the same and hence we can not use someone elses "norm" as a baseline for our own or others.

Depression can affect anyone ilregardless of their situation and often there isn't much of an explanation for it. Mental health services can be good (I actually work for them) but they're not a definitive answer either as you're releying in a multidisciplinary team (Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Nurse, Pharmacist, Social Worker etc) collectively both listening and interpreting the messages you give them and the behaviours they observe of you. And believe me... That mix of academia together doesn't always deduce what's going on for someone and ultimately the treatment prescribed Is not always a true benefit.

Internet dating...? I'm not saying it can't work. But I'd be weary of them.. Not so much for the people you might meet (and there are predators out they preying on vulnerable people) but because the websites themselves are dodgey propositions. Many of them make up fake members and send fake messages in order to get people to subscribe, I've fallen for it myself and lost money to replying to non existent people.

Both anxiety and depression should be treated together. Effective treatment strategies include:

1. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which is often used to treat anxiety disorder with depression. CBT can teach people to manage their fears, anxieties, and depressive symptoms by figuring out what's really causing them; people also learn how to take control of their emotions.

2. Antidepressant medications, which may be prescribed to help treat both conditions. These drugs are often used in conjunction with CBT. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are newer, commonly used antidepressants that offer fewer side effects than older antidepressants, according to the NIMH.

3. Exercise, which can also help both depression and anxiety disorders. Exercise releases chemicals in the body that make you feel good, and it can help you relax. Taking just a 10-minute walk may alleviate symptoms for several hours, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America states.
