Re: How to learn to ride a bicycle with dyspraxia?
Hi all, I think Simon has written a good set of instructions in his post. I cycle quite a lot (have toured through France and Italy and rode the Lands End to John o' Groats in 2011) but all too well I remember how long it took me to learn. I reached the age of 10 before I could "go bike" a...

Re: Headaches or Migraines
Hi Steve, Short answer - yes, all the time. But headaches are a bit of a "non-specific symptom" as the doctors keep saying these days, and can be caused by lots of things. In my case I think the main culprit is dehydration, though they can also be brought on by stress, atmospheric pollutio...

Re: Is it worth trying? (Color Guard / Dancing)
Hi Mayonaka, Welcome and my short answer to the question you pose in your subject line is YES. As far as I can tell, and forgive a bit of a generalisation, but broadly speaking dyspraxics fall into two camps regarding sports / activities that require a high degree of co-ordination / memory. The firs...

Re: Physical therapy or chiropractor for dyspraxia
Yes athletic dysprax, All too often! I guess from your forum name that you push yourself quite hard physically and if so, I am the same. My usual reason for visiting such a specialist is lower back pain - normally left side - that I believe harks back to when I herniated the disk on L5 about 4 years...

Re: You know you're dyspraxic when
I fell off my bike this morning. I was in a hurry and was trying to carry a bulky parcel to the post office under my arm and at the same time mount a pavement one-handed. I have several grazes and a bruised rib to show for it. Should know better at 57 ;-)

Re: Dyspraxia or autism?
Hi Ff1, This is a really tricky one for a number of reasons: - Many autistic and dyspraxic symptoms overlap; - It's not unusual for someone to be on both spectra; - Medical professionals, in my experience, tend to work in "silos" and if you go to an autism expert for a diagnosis (as I did ...

Re: Hey hey
Welcome Will, Good to know that you've come to terms with your dyspraxia, and I think you've come to the right place for what you're looking for. In my humble opinion you'll find us to be a pretty friendly and supportive bunch, and that you'll read plenty of personal stuff - forget the statistics! R...

Any other dyspraxic unpaid carers out there?
This post is a request for advice but will probably turn into a whinge. For that I apologise in advance. Nobody chooses to be an unpaid carer - it's something that you just get landed with, often as your parents get older. It helps if you love your relative, which unfortunately I don't. My mother, w...

Re: More posting please
Fair comment Tom, and guilty as charged as I was on holiday at the beginning of July and then working away from home for most of the rest of the month. I for one hope to be more active again soon

Re: Finding a hobby(for dyspraxics!!!)
I didn't find Mary's book particularly helpful either, and I think readers may have picked up on the somewhat defiant nature of my last post! Nevertheless, I know she wrote the book with the best of intentions and equally am sure that there are many who have found it useful.

Re: Finding a hobby(for dyspraxics!!!)
No disrespect, Poodleover, but I didn't think that this thread was going to get very far, partly because, as others suggest, it may not really a dyspraxia issue, but also because a hobby is something you have to be passionate about and feel that you can't live without it. It is, however, no crime ju...

Re: Defining oneself as dyspraxic - or not?
First, for some subjective reason, I just don't like the sound of the word 'dyspraxia'. It just sounds so ickily subnormal and feeble even if it is a big improvement over the term 'Clumsy Child Syndrome.' I totally agree with you, Ram - it's a really ugly word. Also it's easily confused with dyslex...

Defining oneself as dyspraxic - or not?
I’m interested in the fact that some on this forum choose to define themselves (inwardly or to others) as dyspraxics whilst others do not. This of course is a matter of personal choice, but I would be pleased to learn peoples’ reasoning for plumping for one or the other option, and also what you con...

Re: Any advice for judging road position/kerb distance?
Hi Bookish, Has your instructor helped you find a "reference point" on your windscreen / bonnet area that lines up with the kerb? If not, I suggest that you ask them to do so. I've been driving for 40 years now, but do still sometimes find this hard. On my current car (a Skoda Fabia) if th...
