Re: Support for people who were diagnosed with dyspraxia as a child

I was diagnosed at 11-12. When I was 9-10 I was put in a remedial handwriting class (I wouldn't call it therapy). Later, I was briefly given a typing device for schoolwork (which my highschool didn't bother with.)

That's quite literally all I was offered.

Re: Trying to save my marraige

Dyspraxia doesn't affect your decision making ability to such an extent that cheating is acceptable or forgivable. Yes, I've made my share of dumb mistakes, everyone has, but at the end of the day, anyone that has entered into a relationship (especially a marriage) knows that cheating is horrible, d...

Re: 32 year old son wants a date, never had a girlfriend

Your description of your son was me at 18. (Well, writing came later.) My big tip for him is to go looking for friends that share his interests. That's precisely how I met my girlfriend (13 years and going strong), and is a lot more healthy than looking for pity dates. He'll never feel good about hi...

Re: New human sharing sad experience with a pizza

I'm glad you got a kick out of it - you seemed like you needed a good laugh, and to know you aren't alone. You know what's just as bad as pizza? Tipping over bowls of soup. You lose part of (or all of) your meal, and it gets everywhere. It'll make your dog happy though. The "drip drip" qui...

Re: New human sharing sad experience with a pizza

Don't worry, the pizza gods have visited their dropped offerings on me numerous times. Most recently, about six months back, an XXL frozen pizza - I was starving , and I'd already successfully made my girlfriends pizza for her. What could go wrong, right? Before I'd even had a chance to cut it, the ...

Re: Living alone

Yep, I do the same. Funnily enough, the trick is more alarms - once you get to the second or third alarm you are nice and annoyed, and it's harder and harder to ignore. And after enough time, it just becomes a habit to get up after the first one. Not that I don't still make occasional mistakes, but ...

Re: Hi everyone! Dyspraxic filmmaker here

I can't really answer the rest, but number 3... Yes,I feel like once I am busy with work, I'm best just going until I'm done. Too many distractions (breaks included) and my focus evaporates, and it's extremely hard to get back. However, if I'm not interrupted, I get stuff done and the day just melts...

Re: Living alone

Alarms. When you need a reminder, multiple alarms are a lifesaver. Dentist? Alarm. Feed the cats? Alarm. Work? LOTS of alarms. The nice thing is that just setting the alarm can help you remember, so on occasion you will be ready before your alarm even goes off. The other trick, always be early. Tryi...

Re: Running out of conversation...

I tend to talk about "nothing" a lot. Aimless conversations that go from topic to topic. But I could probably go hours, days, or weeks without actually saying anything to people if the circumstances were right. If I don't have anything to talk about, I don't talk. Not sure if there is anyt...

Re: New Here - Introduction

I like the goblin analogy. It's like that episode of the twilight zone with the creature on the wing - except we were born with it and have ways to slow it down. That's a really fun way to phrase it and capture how it feels when we have really bad days.

Re: New Here - Introduction

Hello, and welcome. Denial is common, but as you have learned, isn't healthy. The same is pretty much universally true - being in denial about being an alcoholic is destructive as well, and I'm sure I could list a bunch more. You have started to accept that you are different - and what people think ...

Re: Dyspraxics are creative people

I'm in total agreement, Tom - our creativity is hard to come by naturally. To use an example, today at work I broke a program (on the user end, so no messing with code) by using the word Hamster. Sure, it's how I used it that mattered (mass copy paste, so any word would have worked), but I was havin...

Re: Sensory overload

I have issues with sound and smell a lot, and actual overloads are almost always caused by sound (and rarely by smell.) I have issues with touch/taste/temperature too though, and light can get me if I'm already being overwhelmed. But by and large, overlapping sounds/excessive volume will give me hea...

Re: How do I disclose dyspraxia positively

I actually disclosed to HR at my new job yesterday. I'd been too nervous to during the hiring process, but some time working has put me at ease, and the feedback was very positive about my strong start. I'm working as a QA tester for a VR company, a startup. They had a shortage of QA testers and my ...

Re: Touch Typing

I understand touch typing difficulties - I can (sort-of) touch type after more than ten years of typing daily. On a good day I can go without even realising I'm not looking down, other days I'm looking down and correcting myself every few minutes, if not more regularly. What I can say is that yes, i...
