Re: Dyspraxia in the Workplace from the GMB Union

This is much better than the DF employers guide, really liked the extra-focus on social skills and the comparison with Autism Spectrum traits. Though I think more focus on the things that dyspraxics are often very good at would be good.

Long-Term Memory

Does anyone else find that their long-term memory is generally better than that of those they know? Just been thinking about this as a really clear example appeared yesterday. The telly was on, showing the Sci-Fi movie 'In Time' with Justin Timberlake and Cillian Murphy. My wife then turns to me and...

Re: Can i have dyspraxia ?

Hi Helen, Yes perhaps, I often think the new name DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder) is not very helpful as it boxes in people's thinking to believe that it's something that only effects physical aspects such as coordination. Whereas dyspraxia comes from Greek, meaning 'difficulty doing', see...

Re: Doctor Who

It's been really interesting how there's been a spate of articles relating to dyspraxia in the mainstream media this week; all because of Doctor Who. Interestingly, I recently applied for transport assistance from access to work and was given a rather flat (and frankly unsympathetic) 'no'. Yet, yest...

Re: Panel Interviews

Yeah, I prepare questions based on the job description competencies, however, you never quite no how they're going to frame those competency questions which is where I struggle and become very ponderous in my response, despite knowing exactly what it is I want to say, just that conveying it succinct...

Panel Interviews

I am currently looking for a job after returning from living abroad. However, I am getting incredibly frustrated at getting to interviews and then getting sympathetic responses outlining how they feel that I'm very talented and knowledgeable on research and research methods (I'm a social/educational...

Re: Dyspraxia Awareness Week

When I mean a while, I mean a long while. As in years of reflection. It would have been great if both myself and my family had been informed that this was something to be aware of when I was younger, so many misunderstandings, upset and arguments could have been avoided. Think of it only as good thi...

Re: Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Yes, quite so! I used to have a lot misunderstandings with my mum too. I remember once I had been watching a film and it was quite near the end. My mum asked me what the story was about. I replied that it was quite complicated and that she should watch it herself from the beginning (which was true)....

Re: Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Perhaps a good idea to spread awareness would be for everyone to write one simple perhaps amusing anecdote about the travails of life with dyspraxia on Facebook or other social media. Perhaps, with the heading 'It's Dyspraxia Awareness Week' and an appeal to share the anecdote. It could be about eit...

Re: What are you working on?

Really interesting how so many dyspraxics are interested in coding. I'm currently studying for a second degree with the University of the People in Computer Science. Learning Python has been very enjoyable. My other project for the last few years has been writing a short story collection www.talesof...

Re: Dancing

I know it feels counter-intuitive (I hate dancing due to recollections of similar issues) but try and take the lead, approach one of the girls to dance with, instead of waiting to be approached. Often I think that dyspraxics odd body language makes us hard to read and therefore makes people nervous ...

Re: Showing Facial Expressions

Hmm, as you say... deep in thought, perhaps the extra time that dyspraxics spend in 'ponderous states' is a contributing factor.

Re: Do you become less dyspraxic the older you get?

Yes, coping strategies improve. I find the physical aspects improve with practice. My family never had a car so rode bikes everywhere, although I was a slow starter I'm a capable bike rider now. Yet, introducing a new physical skill still faces the same difficulties as a 35 year old as it would have...
