Re: Dyspraxia and awkwardness
I've never been able to quite deal with my social awkwardness for some 13 or so years, and I've been diagnosed for 18 years. I GUESS for 5 years I could deal with bars, public places etc better then because I was younger and less aware of my dyspraxia. These days I wont tend to go out unless I'm wit...

Re: Tying laces
I really struggled with it, but probably learnt at about 10 years old, as I was going to secondary school. The trick that really helped me was doing the bunny ears method, as I think the symmetry of the two laces in that version of tying them made it easier for me to get the motions correct. Mine a...

Re: Tying laces
I can tie my laces just fine, but I can never do it in such a way that they stay tied for more than a few hours
Just FYI. Learned about 9 years old. Bunny ears all the way. I'll still be struggling when I'm 70!!

Re: Environment/Sound Sensitivity
My SPD seems to have developed more over time. Is this typical or is this just growing old?
I can't stand noise that's out of my control. I can remember times it never particularly bothered me.

Re: Touch screen phones
Swiping isn't so much of an issue for me, but I've been through 3 screens in the last 12 months after dropping or slipping out of my hands. This. I remember some 14 years ago dropping one of the old motorola clam shell phones on the same day I bought it. No recourse. Accidental damage was not cover...

Has anyone else stuggled with debt?
I would class myself as a dyspraxic who struggles with instant gratification. Amongst other traits, I need quick rewards. I feel my work life is so volatile sometimes that I seek quick rushes to keep me "level". I have issues with spending money. I will think nothing of spending £1000 on a...

Re: Lack of sleep?
Insomnia is a big one for me. I think it's stress that causes it, perhaps a little compulsive behaviour - "I must have a few more games, I am not gratified." I've woken up not able to sleep unless I processed a few dozen photos. Even though it was 3AM. Thinking about it, it is probably an ...

Re: Perseverate on Negative Thoughts?
I can say so much that I absolutely obsess over negatives. I think living life with dyspraxia kind of drills it into you. I will say, that rather than calling things overtly negative, I'd prefer to call them cautious, even cynical. Which I think many of us can relate to. We have to deal with so much...

Re: How to get a diagnosis!!!??
I think the problem is it is not considered a disease or illness. Many GPs would see it as just "the way you are" and would look to treat the symptoms it causes, such as stress, depression and anxiety. My college referred me to a council education psychologist, who assessed me and told the...

Re: No Help in the UK???
Pretty much my experience to be honest. I was diagnosed some 18 years ago by an Educational Psychologist while at college. I say diagnosed loosely. There isn't a diagnosis path as such since it's often groups of different professionals who offer advice and opinion. To my knowledge all the paperwork ...

Re: Feeling Uncomfortable
Unfortunately in my experience, an OT, or Occupational Health referral often means that HR are considering a following a process. It is not always the case, but companies often use these referrals to stay on side with the law. It rarely seems beneficial to the employee in my opinion. The bad news is...

Re: Being let go because of Dyspraxia related performance problems
Hello all, The boss told me that the second part of the meeting was off the record. He handed me a Settlement arrangement, offering to pay me a bit of money, plus a month in Lieu. They want an answer to it in 24 hrs, meaning that I have to somehow get to see a solicitor tomorrow (?!?!?) and then gi...

Re: Sunglasses and earphones in the workplace !?
Earphones for me are a must. I don't so much suffer with light sensitivity, but my noise sensitivity is pretty acute. People used to call me "Bat ears" because I can focus in on conversations going on at the other side of a large office. I work in an admin role in a call centre environment...

Re: Have I compromised my job position because of my dyspraxia?
Even though most dyspraxics are probably mentally stronger than average people. This so many times! The fact we've had to live our entire lives dealing with the fact we cant do things in the same way as other people, plus probably being on the receiving end of more un-necessary disciplinary process...

Re: Have I compromised my job position because of my dyspraxia?
Thanks. It's just frustrating. It causes real stress, and the result is the stress makes my dyspraxic traits worse. The trouble is people just don't understand stress for a start, let alone the dyspraxia. My union rep has told me that because my boss was made aware of the stress some months ago now,...
