Re: fatigue
Yes, fatigue is also a big issue for me. I have had to get increasingly smart about dealing with it (although this is still a work in progress). I try to use power naps straight after work (although in reality they are up to an hour) to try and shake off the sleepiness so that I can still be product...

Re: Hello, and difficulties with structure!!!
Hi Alice. I haven't studied for a doctorate so haven't written on quite the scale that a PhD requires but I know this would be a challenge. I did a masters degree, for which I wrote a 20,000 word thesis, and the writing certainly felt pretty difficult a lot of the time. Presumably you have a supervi...

Re: Anyone else have low muscle tone and bad back pain?
Is it to do with hypermobility syndrome? I know most of us dyspraxics have that and can cause pain. Also it could be that we have bad posture, I know I'm always slumped over a computer and I don't keep my back straight so I always ache in my neck and my shoulders. Maybe just try consciously making ...

Re: Did anyone see the derogatory story about a teacher with Dyspraxia who lost his employment Tribunal
Yes, read about this via Dyspraxia&Life. The news articles make for an exasperating read and are another example of shoddy journalism from people who should know better. I know a complaint is being lodged: it will be interesting to see the outcome. It's important that things like this are picked...

Re: Dyspraxic authors
I agree there are probably lots of authors with dyspraxia that just haven’t said so, including plenty who don’t know they have it. I love thinking up stories and writing but have poor writing stamina, especially as I have a demanding full time job already. I plan to keep working on writing, though, ...

Re: At what age did you learn to swim , or can't you swim?
I could move and stay afloat quickly enough when I started lessons around 8, but not very efficiently. Sense of direction in the pool wasn’t great (once had to be pulled out of the water with that big pole after I got disorientated immediately after jumping in!), which is why I didn’t do much backst...

Re: explaining dyspraxia to family or not?
I have come close to talking to family about it but in actuality I have only told my wife. I’m not sure what my parents would gain from it. Either it would make little to no difference or they’d feel guilty for not getting things checked out earlier. Neither outcome makes a big difference to my life...

Re: I have dyspraxia and I struggle with maths
I had a nightmare with maths at school and, as a teacher myself now, can say that two things are key: Context, and working memory v long term memory. Having revisited a lot of maths concepts in order to teach them competently, I have discovered how little context was provided when I first was taught...

Re: Showing Facial Expressions
I'm usually pretty good at reading other people's expressions but my 'resting' face is apparently interpreted as grumpy. I didn't believe it until I saw a video of myself playing drums at a concert, at which someone had apparently asked who the "angry-looking drummer" was. I did look prett...

Re: Do you become less dyspraxic the older you get?
I agree with the gist of the answers above. Repeated coping strategies can lead to an improvement in some aspects but, at the same time, as we get older the effort required to apply strategies can sometimes be more short-lived and therefore cause things to feel worse. That's before you account for e...

Re: Dyspraxia Awareness Week
These themed weeks always creep up on me and I run out of time to do anything significant. So I won't be doing much but I'll probably be looking up an infographic or similar and sending it to my colleagues. I work in an educational setting where it is relevant but rarely considered, so hopefully it ...

Re: Better writer than speaker
Yes, same here. I much prefer email to phone calls or meetings as it gives me time to select the best words to match what I want to convey. I do also agree, though, about the satisfaction when speaking works well. I love a good debate, but these are harder when written. Every now and again, when spe...

Re: talking and short term memory
I have problems if I have to think about what I say before I say it and it comes out all jumbled and mixed up. However if I just say things impulsively without thinking about it, I come across as far more articulate and intelligent. However what I say I can never back up with any evidence so for ex...
