What software are you using? Sony`s Acid Pro has an auto time stretch function that will put the long vocal into the same BPM as the underlying track. Without timestretching a raw vocal will never quite fit unless you make your track to the same BPM as the vocal. As for learning timing, its going to...

I too was diagnosed at the beginning of the week, I am 34 and its kinda unleashed something, as I can now look back at my childhood and adult life until now, not just try to get away from myself.
