Re: Religion

It's laughable that you guys keep asking for evidence. If I had evidence for what I believed, there would be no need for faith. The existence of God cannot be logically proven, but neither can the lack of an existence of God. I've seen / heard of a lot of miracles taking place in my church, if that'...

Re: Religion

@ Osy: If I wanted reasoned argument, I'd go to a decent forum and post full-length posts. This is just amusing for me. Outrage is certainly not the best word to describe my current state of mind. And anyway, you waver between being just plain wrong (your comment about the Catholic church not being ...

Re: Religion

What the hell is a "put upon Christian"? I'm not portraying myself as anything, this isn't the playground. This is where real people discuss real issues without hiding behind stupid facades and playacting, at least that's what I hope it is. I'm not naive, I just like to give people the ben...

Re: Religion

I make no such claim, I was simply pointing out trends in typical atheist behavior that I have observed over the years.

Re: Religion

This social control and manipulation you are talking about simply doesn't exist. Most countries in the Western world exercise a freedom to practice or (not practice) any religion. Sure, the church has a sphere of influence, but none as great as secular organisations such as the UN or EU. Using words...

Re: Religion

Personally, I find atheists are extremely aggressive, more so than religious people I know. When it comes to the Catholic church, we generally only evangalise when people ask us questions. The atheists I know talk about their views a lot more and (perhaps strangely) feel the need to justify themselv...

Work Concerns

Hi Everyone, I'm really having trouble with decisions regarding my career path. I'm in a state of almost perpetual worry, because even though I am a long way from graduating I can't see myself doing any job well enough to keep it. I've been thinking of potential jobs, and because my degree is in Eng...

Re: Religion

@Osymandus - I don't think the hypothesis that Mary Magdalene, being the first witness to the resurrection, was the first Bishop holds any ground. The Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles at Pentecost, making them the first "Bishops" of the church. By my knowledge Mary was not present at Pen...

Re: Religion

I'm liking the variety here; different religions fascinate me also, though I dedicate most of my research to the numerous Protestant demoninations. The sheer number of them astounds me. I guess I find them most fascinating because they follow the same scriptures as the Catholic Church - albeit in ve...

Religion

Just thought I'd start a topic to get everyone's views on religion - it's a contentious issue, but always makes for interesting reading! I'm a Catholic myself, though I'm doing a Diploma in Ministry at an Evangelical College (I also go to University). Feel free to contribute, and please don't be shy...

Re: Are you ok Harris? And other people in Christchurch

I'm fine. We've just got power back now but we are still in a state of shock. It's a big blow to the city considering that everything was starting to look normal again after the September quake. The CBD is in tatters. It's awful that people have died. It still hasn't sunk in properly. Thanks for all...

Re: Yet another one.

My parents were concerned about some of my behavioural tendencies so I visited an array of child psychologists and the like. I think I was diagnosed at age 5, so I've known about it as long as I can remember. That being said, I don't think the awareness of how it affected me kicked in until later on...
